Rocky Top Retreat Luxe Top-Floor 2BR, Sunrise Views, Sleeps 6, Dog-Friendly
Rocky Top Retreat is the top-floor, east-corner condo at Blue Ridge Mountain Club, a gated 6,000-acre community folded into the ridgelines between Boone and Blowing Rock. Facing east from the top floor means the sunrise comes up over the mountain peaks and straight through the balcony doors, and it is the reason this is the unit people ask for.
The Views - Being on the corner, on the top floor, changes everything. Black-framed windows wrap two walls of the great room, so the view follows you from the kitchen island to the sofa to the dining table. Cathedral ceilings and dark hand-hewn beams lift the whole space and pull the light in. Fog settles into the valley at dawn, hummingbirds work the balcony rail through the morning, weather tracks across the far ridges by afternoon, and the whole range goes blue at dusk. It changes every hour, and you will find yourself watching it.
The Renovation - This place was taken down to the studs in 2021 and rebuilt with real care across its 1,310 square feet. Wide plank hardwood throughout. White shaker cabinetry, quartz counters, a stainless gas range and a full suite of new Samsung appliances. Buster & Punch switches and dimmers, which is the kind of detail most rentals never think about. A floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace anchors the great room and the dining table alike. Calm, current and grown-up, without losing the mountain-lodge warmth you came for.
Room at the Table - The round dining table seats four, and the counter-height island seats another four on barstools, so eight of you can eat, work or play cards without anyone perching on the arm of a sofa. The island has built-in charging stations, which sounds like a small thing until six people arrive with eleven devices. There's a small desk with a mountain view too, if someone has to steal an hour for work.
The Outdoor Summer Kitchen - The covered balcony is the reason people rebook. A built-in outdoor summer kitchen with a stainless grill, vent hood and prep counter. A bar-height counter along the rail. A rope-hung cushioned porch swing and two wooden rocking chairs pointed straight at the ridgeline. It's covered end to end, so rain only makes it better. The king suite has a second, private balcony of its own - two chairs, morning sun, and coffee before anyone else is awake.
Sleeping - Both bedrooms have their own dedicated bathroom, which is the quiet luxury of this floor plan: two couples can travel together and nobody negotiates a bathroom. Both beds are Tempur-Pedic.
The primary suite sleeps a king beneath vaulted ceilings, with a smart TV, plantation shutters for sleeping in, its own private balcony, and an ensuite bath with a double vanity and a subway-tiled walk-in shower. The guest room holds a queen in a rustic wood-and-iron frame with its own smart TV and its own full bath with a tub and shower combo. A sofa bed in the great room brings it to six.
Comfort - Central air conditioning and propane heat. Fast wifi, 500 Mbps, which is more than most homes have. A full-size stacked washer and dryer in the unit. Smart TVs in every room with YouTube TV, Netflix and Prime. A Keurig and a Cuisinart drip brewer for whoever's up first. And though it's the top floor, the building has an elevator and the walk from the parking area is step-free, so you can bring the groceries, the cooler and the skis up without a single flight of stairs.
Your Dog Is Welcome - I'm happy to host one dog, 40 pounds or under. There are pet-waste bins close by and at the clubhouse lawn, and 6,000 acres of trails to wear them out on.
The Club - The community is a genuine part of the stay, and you have access to it as my guest. The clubhouse has a bar and dining with open-air mountain-view seating, and on select nights there's live music, cornhole and fire pits going. There's a large new pool with a food truck and towel service. The fitness center has floor-to-ceiling mountain views, fitness classes and morning coffee, plus massage and facials by appointment. Miles of hiking trails wind through the community, with fishing in the creeks, streams and ponds - just ask me for the trail map. The community sets a daily amenity fee for club access, so tell me before you arrive if you'd like to use it and I'll confirm the current rate and get you set up.
The High Country - Downtown Boone is 10 miles away, about 20 minutes, for Appalachian State, King Street, breweries and groceries. Blowing Rock is 14 miles, about 25. The Blue Ridge Parkway is roughly ten minutes from the gate. Appalachian Ski Mtn is about twenty-five minutes in winter, with Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain around forty-five. Grandfather Mountain, Tweetsie Railroad, gem mining, apple picking and a dozen waterfalls fill out the list.
Good to Know - Self check-in with a smart lock. I arrange your gate access with the community before you arrive. Maximum six guests. One dog, 40 lbs or under, with a pet fee. No smoking or vaping. No parties or events. A car is essential, and in winter I strongly recommend all-wheel or four-wheel drive.
