La Serena is one of the most attractive neocolonial cities of South America and it has amazing tourist attraction not only in its historical urban area but also its surroundings, only 120 kms away to the north(Atacama) it is located the Humboldt Penguin National Reserve with its Damas and Chañaral de Aceituno islands; 60kms east the great Elqui Valley, cradle and birthplace of the most important cultural emblems of Chile(Gabriela Mistral literature, Diaguitas indigenous pottery, pisco distilleries, , historical pre-Columbian villages and the oldest and most avant-garde wineries) besides a unique atmosphere, pyramidal mountains and astronomical observatories. Towards south (100km) you have not only the most extreme forest of Chile, the Fray Jorge National park but also the most important archaeological, artistic and ceremonial site for pre-Columbian cultures, the Enchanted Valley.
