Bed Layout: Master Bedroom: Queen Size Bed North Guest Bedroom: Queen Size Bed South Guest Bedroom 1: Queen Size Bed South Guest Bedroom 2: Queen Size Bed A little bit about the area: La Jolla is another San Diego neighborhood exuding a Mediterranean village atmosphere. La Jolla Shores' picturesque sandy beach runs north from La Jolla Cove and offers great snorkeling and scuba diving. Known for its galleries, shops, restaurants and the highly scenic coastline, La Jolla is also home to branch of the Museum of Contemporary Art of San Diego. To the north of La Jolla is Torrey Pines, home to the Torrey Pines Golf Course, one of the nation's finest public golf courses and the site of the Farmers Insurance Open in late January or early February. Located around the course is the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, which offers paths and rock outcroppings to hike on as you make your way to pristine and often empty beaches. THINGS WE LOVE ABOUT THIS PROPERTY! BEACHES: For recorded surf and dive conditions, call 619-221-8824. Best Beach for Kids: La Jolla Shores. The Shores usually has the smallest surf and is most likely to have Lifeguards on duty. It has a little playground and a nice grassy area just off the beach - perfect for picnics. Parking is free, but difficult to find in the summer, so go down early or use a ride sharing service. (Ask them to take you to 8277 Camino Del Oro, La Jolla, CA). Most Isolated Beach: Black's Beach. Black's is one of the least crowded beaches in San Diego. It can be reached via the Black's Beach trailhead, a 0.6 mile walk from the house (9601 La Jolla Farms Rd). The path down to the beach is paved, less than half a mile long, but steep! So best suited for guests in good shape. The ocean at Black's can be hazardous. Black's has very light Lifeguard coverage, surf is often larger than other La Jolla beaches, and there's at least one big, permanent rip-tide right at the foot of the trail. Black's is clothing-optional. Best Snorkeling: La Jolla Cove. The cove is a tiny jewel of a beach, and in many ways is the heart of La Jolla. It's usually more protected from waves than other beaches, and the rocky ocean floor is full of sea life. Because La Jolla Cove is within the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park (a marine refuge area), swimming devices such as surfboards, boogie boards, and even inflatable mattresses, are not permitted, and kayakers are not allowed into the Cove. Again, parking in the summer can be difficult, so you might need some patience to park. Nice Walks from the house. Scripps Coastal Reserve Biodiversity Trail: Highly Recommended! The trailhead starts .3 miles from the house at Whitecliff Dr, La Jolla, (no street number necessary). It's a big loop out along the cliffs overlooking the Pacifc and Point La Jolla UC San Diego UCSD is 2 blocks north of the house, just across Torrey Pines road. It's hard to pick one walk through the campus, so much of it is beautiful and interesting. Do a google search for “Walk UCSD” and you will find some suggestions. Torrey Pines Park 12600 N Torrey Pines Rd Only the most ambitious actually walk there from the house, but it's possible. Probably best to drive, pay to enter the park, drive up to the ranger station at the top. Many trails heads meet there. This is one of the two places in the world where Torrey Pine trees are native (the other is Santa Cruz Island off the coast of California.) Cool Stuff The Cave Shop 1325 Coast Blvd, La Jolla Sits atop a cliff in downtown La Jolla. For a few dollars ($3 or $5) they will let you go down a long, hand-dug tunnel to one of the sea caves at the bottom of the cliff. It's kind of hokey and weird. Elementary-age kids love it. They also rent masks and fins to use at the cove. The Glider Port 2800 Torrey Pines Scenic Dr On days with a breeze, paragliders jump off the cliff and fly away at the glider port. Free parking, and there's also a steep trail from the glider port to Black's Beach. La Jolla Kayaking 2199 Avenida De La Playa, La Jolla Rents boogie boards, snorkeling gear, stand-up paddle boards, and kayaks. They also lead kayak tours. Located at the southern end of La Jolla Shores beach. Food: We have a lot of good places to eat, but here are a few local's tips. La Estancia Hotel 9700 N Torrey Pines Rd, La Jolla A mile north on Torrey Pines Road. The restaurants have good food and drinks. TIP: If you get a spa treatment, you can use the pool all day. Alternatively, for a fee you can rent a cabana for a group next to the pool. La Valencia Hotel: 1132 Prospect St, La Jolla Want a bit of old La Jolla? La Valencia Hotel sits on the hill above La Jolla Cove. It has the best breakfast by far, and the best breakfast view (well, it doesn't compare to the one you wake up to at the house). If you get there before 8:00, you will find ample parking and you will have La Sala Restaurant to yourselves. La Valencia was a favorite of Hollywood in the '30s and '40s. It appeared in La Jolla resident Raymond Chandler's '58 suspense novel “Playback”. For those interested in more recent celebrity, Eddie Vedder - lead singer for Pearl Jam - was a security guard there in the '80s. Bistro Du Marche: 7437 Girard Ave, La Jolla, CA 92037 This is a new discovery for us. If you like French cuisine, this is the place. Small, so it's best to make a reservation. Costa Brava: 1653 Garnet Ave, San Diego Fabulous Spanish tapas, often with live flamenco music. Of all of our suggestions, this one is farthest away: 8 miles. Cucina Caprese 9595 La Jolla Shores Dr Only on Thursday at lunchtime, a travelling wood-fired oven parks at the church right at the top of Inyaha lane. Their website ( is incredibly unhelpful about dates and times, so don't depend on it, but if they show up, see if the fig and prosciutto pizza is in season. Philz Coffee 8849 Villa La Jolla Drive Closest good coffee beans are at Philz Coffee are a mile-and-a-half away at. That's also where you will find a Whole Foods and a Ralphs for groceries.
