Since the late 19th century, Kirkcudbright has been renowned as an artists’ colony, with artists such as Jessie M King, E A Hornel and Charles Oppenheimer making it their home.

Today it is known as “The Artists’ Town” of Dumfries and Galloway, and in 2018 the Kirkcudbright Galleries opened, which showcases world class art as well as the work of the local artists. This lovely town on the Estuary, still has a busy and bustling harbour where you can watch the fishing boats return with their catch. Stroll through the town and visit the famous Broughton House, once home of E. A. Hornel or experience the Arts and Crafts Trail. Throughout the year the town hosts a diverse range of annual events from Farmers’ Markets, Country Fair, the Jazz Festival, Festival of Light, the Riding of the Marches and of course the spectacular Tattoo, an event not to be missed. With some lovely little shops dotted around the town and fabulous places to eat the town is an ideal location to base yourself while exploring this delightful area.
