The room smelled terribly- to the point where we were looking for a new hotel before we even sat down. What sealed the deal is that we then heard screaming (domestic violence) from another room, realized there wasn't a phone to call down quickly to the front desk. I have stayed in many low budget spots and have never left a hotel, let alone left without a backup plan.
