The Adobe House at Mendocino Stone Ranch, by Vinifera Homes
“We left feeling renewed — the stillness, the stonework, and the views made it unforgettable.”
Nestled in the coastal redwoods with sweeping ocean views, The Adobe House is a handcrafted, off-grid straw-bale retreat for artists, nature lovers, and those seeking stillness. Just five minutes from the beach, yet worlds away, this sanctuary blends intentional design with the rhythms of the land — offering connection, creativity, and quiet in every corner.
FEATURED ON ABC – CELEBRATED FOR ITS ARTISTRY & NATURAL BEAUTY!
From the moment you arrive, The Adobe House surrounds you with stillness — the hush of the redwoods, the rhythm of the ocean, and the sense that this place was built with care, vision, and artistry. Perched above Anchor Bay, the home offers a timeless feeling: like you’ve stepped into something sacred and grounded.
Step onto the expansive 1,000 sq ft redwood deck, and let time slow down. Mornings begin with coffee in the misty light of the Pacific; evenings settle around the firepit under a canopy of stars.
Inside, the home is warm and elemental. A master suite with a king bed and private ensuite invites deep rest. The additional bedrooms — a queen, a double, and another room with full bed and a Japanese floor mat as an extra bed — offer space for couples, families, and quiet reflection.
A fully equipped kitchen, cozy living and dining areas, and two full bathrooms make it easy to settle in. While the home runs fully off-grid (solar-powered with propane generator backup), it offers central heating and modern comforts throughout.
But the land is the true experience. Fifteen private acres of redwoods, meadows, and artisan stonework invite exploration. Over 30 stone masonry installations — arches, towers, spirals, and mosaics — are tucked into trails and glades, each one a meditation in itself.
Many of these are built using ancient “dry-stack” techniques, meaning no mortar or glue holds them together, yet they’re sturdy enough to withstand earthquakes.
Guests are encouraged to touch, walk through, and even climb some of the pieces, making the land feel truly interactive. In fact, when it rains, the stones change color and texture, creating a living, shifting canvas.
“Every corner of the property tells a story — from the stone arches to the deck at sunset. We left feeling inspired, grateful, and already planning our return.”
Seasonal Fire Pit & Outdoor Living:
From November through April, the outdoor fire pit is available for cozy fireside evenings. Please note that while there is an indoor wood stove, it is not available for guest use due to fire risk.
A Living Work of Art:
Founded in 2002 by artist and builder Peter Joseph Mullins, Mendocino Stone Ranch is more than a property — it’s a vision. Mullins invited master masons from around the world to leave their mark on the land, and today you’ll find their work in every path, wall, and sculpture. You might pause in the Temple of Imperfection, gaze out from the Fish Rock Watchtower (just 500 feet from the house), or stumble upon something new on every wander.
The Fish Rock Tower is especially remarkable, designed with a lime mortar that actually strengthens with every rainfall — one of Mullins’ prized masterpieces.
