So, I read previous reports that mentioned ants and I can confirm that we did experience them everyday in the room somewhere or other. Having a glass of water by the bed attracted ants, anything left on the floor seemed to attract ants and you must be careful to not leave food out in the kitchen area. However, they weren't big ants, about half the size of UK ants, and they weren't in large numbers - we put up with it. Some items of fruit at the breakfast table had ants on one occasion and the ants weren't something we had experienced in our other Madeira hotel. The room was spacious and clean, although the lighting was a bit dim. A 'get you in' basket of food is provided and there is a well-stocked mini-bar, all at cost. The view of the harbour was partially obscured from the room, but the patio area had an un-interrupted view of the town and coast. Staff were extremely helpful and friendly and the breakfast was reasonable for 12 EU each, consisting of some limited hot options (pancakes, omelettes, bacon and beans etc), accompanied by a small basket of fresh rolls and croissants, cheese and ham slices, jams and 2 slices of cakes and fresh fruit and fresh juice. Both the exterior and interior of the hotel were tired. As over 60's, the walk into Funchal and back was not as bad as seem to suggest (about 10 - 15mins each way). The aircon was very effective and there is also a mid-size TV in the room. Overall, the slightly tired décor and the ant issue makes this a 3*+ hotel.

Unfortunately this hotel is not worth the ratings. I don’t think it's fair to other hotels that really deserve 9 stars ratings. The hotel does not reflect the pictures posted, It’s extremely outdated, exterior paint is chipped through entire building. We had two rooms and both had broken outlets, peeled paint, mildew in showers and not to mention ANTS. We slept with ants crawling on us. Staff were nice, garden and the view from balcony were truly beautiful. But I would never stay there again. Also, not a single iron for the entire hotel.

Did not really enjoy our stay. AC was down as soon as we got there, although it was fixed immediately it was very weak. The bed was extremely uncomfortable and I can tell it was old as I can feel the springs in my back. Hotel doesn’t have an iron either. Room got ants as well. Breakfast was very below average The reception, however was very nice, and the room was quite spacious I just would not say it is the 9+ rating that Expedia has it as.

This property is an absolute gem. It’s walkable into town but is set amidst peace and tranquility. The room was lovely and breakfast was excellent. Hope to go back again someday!

Beautiful Property!

This hotel is beautiful! The property is well taken care of and has beautiful plants/flowers! The view of the city from the hotel is breathtaking. The staff is very nice and helpful. The only difficulty we had was figuring out how to initially get into the property since it is locked/gated.

I splurged on this place and was disappointed. We stayed for 5 nights. Nothing was included in our stay. Tea and coffee and breakfasts were extra. The tap water didn't taste good, and it was a bit of an argument to get a bottle of water after the first day. (We also purchased water in town each day).The property is nice and we had a pretty view from our room of the garden and Funchal. Unfortunately, it's almost a kilometre uphill from Funchal, so even though we are fit and walk regularly, we didn't want to make too many trips a day into town. There are no dining options nearby. The staff was friendly enough and our room was cleaned daily. The phone didn't work (a staff member tried to fix it and switched out phones, but there is a wiring problem), all the doors squeaked, and there was a dangerous broken outlet. The kitchenette was handy, and there is plentiful storage for clothes. We regret staying so far from Funchal.

Everything was great. My room was clean and quite big. Bed was very comfortable. Service was excellent. They acoomodated me for a really late check in as my plane got delayed. Breakfast was really good and the grounds around the hotel were a beautiful garden.

The hotel was beautiful and the staff lovely and helpful. The only slight drawback is that it's rather far from any restaurants/shops/attractions - an arduous 30min walk up and down the hill. On the other hand, it meant it was quiet, and the views of the harbour fabulous
