I was lucky enough to stay at Cannery Row for two weeks. The house overlooks a wildlife preserve, the historical landmark of Friday Harbor's cannery, the tidal Argyle lagoon, a saltwater river that flows to the sea from the lagoon, and Jackson beach. A stone's throw from the firepit in the backyard, great blue heron stand gracefully in the lagoon accompanied by sand pipers, sea gulls and rarer birds. Most of the day and night, a saltwater river flows in and out of the lagoon, providing a peaceful gurgling in the background. Our host Nigel provided a kayak to explore the lagoon and bay. At low tide, we could easily ford the stream and cross the spit to the cannery and Jackson beach. The house itself is extraordinarily comfortable and well laid out. It provides plenty of room for two couples or a family of four with a master suite, another spacious bedroom, and a Murphy bed in the cozy living room. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking family meals that can be enjoyed in the dining room adjoining the kitchen and living room. The furnishings aren't fancy, but are virtually new and modern Scandinavian in style. Everything is tidy and extremely clean. It's a perfect place for a relaxing retreat. The center of Friday Harbor is a 15 minute stroll away with interesting shops and gourmet restaurants galore. Please don't book it in early August; I plan to come back for as many years as possible!
