GREAT place to stay, especially if it's your first time in Cusco! Great location in the middle of everything. I had a room overlooking the main plaza and it was amazing. The staff is friendly and great.
Fine Print: I wouldn't recommend staying here if you're driving a car or have a rental car, because parking is difficult in the area and the hotel doesn't have a parking lot of its own that I know of.
Fine Print: I also wouldn't recommend staying here if you're a light sleeper because the plaza can get noisy with events. I slept just fine but other people who I was with did not.
To Be Improved: everything is fine really but the only thing I can think of is it maybe they need to put cups or glasses in the in the room so you can drink water or other beverages.
We stayed there 3 nights in June and loved the location. All the good restaurants and shops are all around the plaza. The lobby and the rooms and small but it doesn’t matter because it’s not where we hangout. Because the rooms are small, there is no refrigerator or microwave. The staff are friendly and the breakfast is not bad. Oh, the plaza was full of dancing activities every day from 9am to 11 pm during the month of June and we love it.
The Hotel El Virrey is just about the only hotel directly on and facing the historic Plaza de Armas. It’s ideal for exploring the center of old Cusco.
The staff were very friendly and as helpful as possible.
The breakfast included with a night’s stay is typical of most Peruvian hotels but doesn’t start until 6:30 am which doesn’t work travellers doing an early start to Machu Picchu.
We stayed in two different rooms during our stays there. If you’re booking try to get the suite room 205. It’s spacious with a balcony facing the Plaza. Perfect for watching the square without being pestered by the constant stream of independent ‘souvenir’ vendors hawking their wares. The other room, a double standard on the third floor was tiny with no room to move and a window facing an inner ventilation shaft.
Because it is an older boutique hotel there is no elevator. And there is often just a petit young woman on the front desk so be prepared to carry your own luggage possibly as much as two flights of stairs. An exhausting labour in the thin oxygen of the 11,000 ft. altitude.
But given the very reasonable price of the rooms and it’s excellent location, we highly recommend the El Virrey and would give it at least a 4 out of 5 stars.
Perfect location with gorgeous view! Book the panoramic suite- you can look right at the church from your small balcony. Although the bed was hard, it was a large and clean room. The hotel was walking distance from all main areas of Cusco since this is in the main square. Good breakfast.
El Virrey's location could not be better. You're right in the middle of the square. So much to do right outside your door. Showers were hot and if you needed it they had a heater in the room. We were a party of 6 and one day we were leaving before breakfast and ask if we might get something to go. They did us one better, they set up a full breakfast for us earlier than they would normally open. The woman that ran the breakfast couldn't have been more accommodating. If there was something new to the buffet, she would walk around and ask everyone if they would like to try it. The front desk also was great. I used the laundry service, left the laundry at the front desk and when I got back late the next night stopped to pick it up and told it was already in my room! They were friendly and helpful. We had a great stay and would recommend it to my friends.
GREAT LOCATION. Can't beat it. Very friendly staff. Stored my luggage for 2 days while visiting Machu Picchu. Beautiful decor. Very safe. Packed breakfast for me also.
The location for this property is the best, rooms are a little small but to be honest you only sleep and shower there's so much to do in Cusco! Tours will pick you up early. A lot of restaurants, bars, coffe shops, souvenir stores around and right in the main plaza.
Staff was amazing. Zoila did our check in and she was very helpful. They have tea and coffee in the lobby as a courtesy abd everything you need just by asking.
