The Schipol is a major hub for KLM, Arkefly, Martinair, Transavia, and Corendon Dutch Airlines. It is also a European hub for Delta Air Lines. The airport is the fourth busiest airport of Europe in terms of passenger traffic. Amsterdam Airport Schipol has a huge shopping area that is an added attraction for air passengers. The airport also houses a permanent library and an annex of the Rijksmuseum, which offers a glimpse of the contemporary and classical art that can be found in the world famous Amsterdam museum. There is a passenger railway station at the airport, operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen, which can transport you into the city after your Amsterdam flight. Every couple of hours there is an InterCity train service by NS Highspeed that connects the airport to Berlin. Buses and cars can also take you into Amsterdam from Schipol.

Amsterdam Weather

Amsterdam climate is characterized by mild summers and cool winters. The best time to take an Amsterdam flight is from May to August. During this period, the tulips are in full bloom, offering wonderful photo opportunities, and the weather tends to remain consistent. With rains spread throughout the year, it is wise to pack in a rain jacket so you do not have to remain confined indoors. The coldest months are from December to February, when it may snow.

Getting Around Amsterdam

It is convenient to get around by public transportation after your flight to Amsterdam. In order to reduce traffic congestion, driving cars in the city center is not encouraged. Parking charges are heavy in Amsterdam, streets are closed to cars, and roads are often one-way traffic only. Public transportation consists of regional and suburban buses operated by Arriva and Connexxion, tramlines and metro lines. The waterways of Amsterdam can be accessed by free ferries and two-way charging ferries, water taxis, water bus, electric rental boats, and canal cruises. All-in-all, whether you want to visit the Van Gogh Museum or the Anne Frank Huis, they are all within reach and easily accessible.

Amsterdam Attractions

Amsterdam is a city of rich architectural offerings, with a baroque style defining the city's "golden age." Some of the major attractions of Amsterdam are:

  • Van Gogh Museum, a must-see for visitors, houses a huge collection of paintings and drawings by Vincent Van Gogh and his contemporaries.
  • Westerkerk, the highest church tower in Amsterdam, is a splendid building designed in the Renaissance style.
  • Begijnhof houses the oldest standing wooden building - het Houten Huys - a fine example of Gothic architecture.
  • Scheepvaarthuis, is the first real example of the Amsterdam School style and is a splendid sight with a ship's bow-like street layout and wonderful iron and glasswork interiors.
  • Huis Met de Hoofden, a brilliant model of Dutch Renaissance style, the front is done up with varied decoration pieces.
