The Old Schoolhouse at Penrhos

The Old Schoolhouse is a beautifully restored former village school in the peaceful village of Penrhos, Monmouthshire. Combining original features with modern comforts, it offers a spacious and comfortable base for those looking to explore the Welsh borders and Wye Valley.

The spacious living room is the perfect place to relax after a day of exploring, with plenty of seating and a pool table for family evenings in. The separate dining room provides a welcoming setting for everything from celebratory meals to leisurely breakfasts. At the heart of the home is a fully equipped kitchen with everything needed for a self-catered stay, while a separate boot and utility room offers practical facilities including a washing machine, spin dryer, iron, ironing board and clothes airer. The former library has been transformed into a cosy snug and cinema room, providing an additional space to unwind. A downstairs cloakroom completes the ground floor.

Outside, the patio area is ideal for al fresco dining and features a gas barbecue for enjoying meals in the fresh air. A standout feature of The Old Schoolhouse is its private outdoor swimming pool, available from 1st April to 30th September, offering a wonderful place to relax and make the most of the warmer months. Please note the pool is not heated.

All four bedrooms are located on the first floor, providing flexible accommodation for all. The master bedroom features an Emperor sized-bed and an ensuite with a walk-in shower, toilet and vanity unit. The remaining three bedrooms can each be arranged as either super king-size beds or twin beds upon request before your arrival. Unless we receive an alternative request from you, the super king bed will be made up in its standard configuration. A family bathroom on the first floor includes a bath with an overhead shower, toilet and vanity unit.

The Old Schoolhouse is ideally located for exploring Monmouthshire and the Wye Valley. Spend a day in the market town of Monmouth, with its independent shops, cafés and historic landmarks, or discover the stunning scenery of the Wye Valley, known for its riverside walks and picturesque villages. History enthusiasts can visit Tintern Abbey, Raglan Castle and Chepstow Castle, while outdoor lovers can enjoy walking and cycling trails, canoeing and kayaking on the River Wye, horse riding and wildlife spotting. The area is also home to vineyards, gardens, local markets, golf courses and traditional country pubs, offering something to enjoy throughout the year.

For those looking to venture further afield, the Forest of Dean is perfect for woodland walks and family adventures, with attractions such as Puzzlewood and Clearwell Caves nearby. The Brecon Beacons National Park offers spectacular scenery, waterfalls and mountain trails, while the vibrant city of Cardiff provides excellent shopping, museums, sporting events and Cardiff Castle. The historic spa town of Cheltenham and the beautiful beaches of the Gower Peninsula also make fantastic day trips, making The Old Schoolhouse an excellent base for discovering South Wales and the surrounding border counties.

A peaceful few days

I stayed at The Old Schoolhouse with my three kids (8, 6 and 3) for a few very hot days in August. The swimming pool was absolute heaven and we enjoyed blackberry picking every evening along the quiet lane. The location is beautiful, a 10 minute drive down a single track road, it feels very remote and truly peaceful. My kids loved visiting Raglan Park Farm which is about 15 minutes away by car. The house itself was beautifully decorated and spotless. It was really well set up for kids with a fab cinema room, air hockey, loads of kids’ books, games and plenty of plastic crockery and cutlery. A couple of small improvements which would make it even better - some sun loungers for around the pool (there are chairs, but nothing you can recline, so if you want to lie in the sun, you have to lie on a towel on the floor). We weren’t provided with olive oil which was a bit of a pain as I had assumed there would be some to cook with, and the salt grinder has run out of salt. Other than those minor issues, I would wholeheartedly recommend a stay here, and hope to return one day! - Sun loungers - olive oil - checking salt and pepper grinders full
