Ty Hebog: 17th Century Barn on a Mountain Farm
Ty Hebog is a characterful, Grade II listed 17th-century barn set above Beddgelert on our working mountain farm. With original wooden beams and a cosy log burner, it offers a warm, atmospheric retreat. Perfect for hikers, we’re 7 minutes from the Rhyd Ddu Snowdon path, with rugged mountain trails starting right from your door. While in the heart of our farm, the barn’s unique orientation offers a secluded feel with beautiful views across the Eryri mountain from your private patio.
The space
Ty Hebog is a detached barn conversion full of period character. As a traditional stone building, it is designed to be a snug sanctuary in winter and naturally cool in the summer.
The Log Burner: The small but powerful wood-burning stove is the centrepiece of the living area. We provide a starter pack of logs; please note that it heats the space very effectively, making it a very toasty retreat even on the coldest mountain nights!
The Atmosphere: To preserve the historic stonework, the Barn has few windows, instead drawing soft light from the roof lights and the glazed back door. As a traditional stone building, it remains naturally cool in the summer and holds the heat well in winter.
Living & Dining: Three steps lead down from the entrance into the open-plan kitchen and living area.
The Crog Loft: A mezzanine-style bedroom with a double bed. Please note the ceiling follows the traditional sloping roofline of the barn.
The Patio: The private patio features a dining area and bench, offering uninterrupted views across the open fields and mountains.
Connect: Reliable free fibre Wi-Fi, suitable for streaming or remote work.
Practicality: A washing machine and dryer are located in a shared outbuilding next to the cottage.
Mind Your Head
As a Grade II listed 17th-century building, there are several areas with low head height where you will need to duck. This includes the area just before the front entrance, the patio door, on the steps down to the kitchen, and parts of the crog loft.
Life on the Farm & Privacy
The Barn offers a secluded experience. The patio door looks away from the farm buildings toward the open landscape. We are a working farm, so guests should expect the authentic sounds and movement of rural life.
Exploring Eryri
We are located just 7 minutes from the Rhyd Ddu Snowdon path, with rugged trails starting from our gate. These can be wet and boggy—sturdy, waterproof boots are essential.
Guest access
Parking: Free off-road parking is available through the gate directly next to the cottage.
The Scenic Walk to Beddgelert: A private footpath leads directly from our farm down through the fields and ancient woodland into the village (approx. 10 mins downhill / 20 mins uphill). You’ll find traditional Welsh pubs, a small shop, and local places to eat. As this is a natural mountain path, it is unpaved, uneven, and can be very boggy in wet weather—sturdy, waterproof boots are essential.
The Alternative Route: If you prefer to avoid the steeper fields, you can drive to the bottom of our private farm track and park there. From there, it is a short, flatter stroll of a few hundred yards along the main road (please note there is no pavement on this short stretch of road) into the village centre.
The Drive Up: Access to the farm is via a 1/2 mile private concrete track. It is a steady, winding climb with cattle grids. While well-maintained and suitable for all standard cars, it is a rural mountain road, so we recommend taking it steady—especially if you are arriving for the first time after dark.
Other things to note
Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) from the Door: For very experienced hikers, it is possible to summit Yr Aran directly from our farm and continue along the ridge to the Snowdon summit. This is a long, demanding day involving scrambling and high-level navigation. We have a detailed guide in our guestbook —please only attempt this with full mountain kit and a respect for our farm boundaries and gates.
The Craflwyn Circular: A beautiful, rugged route leads up behind the farmhouse and down into the National Trust's Craflwyn Estate. It follows the river into Beddgelert before returning uphill to the Barn. Note: parts of our lower fields are persistently boggy (waterproof boots are essential!), and we ask all guests to ensure every farm gate is securely closed behind them.
The Rhyd Ddu Path: If you prefer a more established trail, the Rhyd Ddu path is just a 7-minute drive away. It offers a steady, scenic climb with spectacular views of the coastline.
The Coastal Weather Escape: If it's a cloudy day on the farm, head to Porthmadog (just 15 minutes away). The coast often has its own weather system and stays in the sun even when the mountains are in the mist! Explore the harbour, the steam railways, or continue a few minutes further to the stunning beaches of the Llŷn Peninsula.
