Travelers arrived at their destinations in all kinds of different conditions and circumstances. Many have been on difficult flights, some have come for difficult, family reasons, others, like myself have driven over 1000 miles over the course of 16 hours for a family event. The role of a hotel receptionist should be to take help take the edge off of a travelers anxieties, make them feel welcome, give them the easy button. They’re always in an excellent position to do so, and so I’m blown away when they don’t, or when they choose to add more anxiety or resistance to the travelers journey, despite the fact that the job they hold is in fact possible because of these very travelers. Checking into the hotel today about an hour ahead of the official check-in time, I didn’t have any particular expectation that I would be able to get into my room and that was fine, but I didn’t need a lecture from the 20 something-year-old receptionist that made it very clear to me that I was asking for an exception that was not within the policy of the property. If she had smiled, and maybe offered to get me a bottle of water, or suggest that I enjoy a little downtime in the waiting area while she checked in with housekeeping to see what she could do, that would’ve been fine, anything, but she did none of that. She just asserted her authority and made sure I understood who was in charge. It didn’t matter that my eyes were glazed over from 1000 miles of highway, or that I was tired and about to drop.
