Known as the second city of the Philippines, Cebu offers a much more laid back atmosphere than nearby Manila. Situated close to the beach, Cebu has a thriving outsourcing industry. It's also home to many exotic lodgings, and unique historical sites; after more than 400 years of Spanish and American colonial rule. Visitors can check out the Basilica of Santo Niño, a large church that was founded in the early 1500s.
Visitors generally arrive in Cebu via the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) that's located on an island next to the city. It's also possible to get to Cebu by boat, as ferries from around the country stop at the city's port. Visitors will find taxis are available all over Cebu. You can also get around the city using a uniquely Filipino mode of transportation known as a Jeepney; elongated jeeps outfitted with bench seats in the back, they typically run along designated routes.
If you happen to be in Cebu in January, make sure to check out Sinulog. During the festival, performers and dance groups parade through the streets of downtown in colorful costumes. The majority of the city shuts down for the festival, so those wishing to experience other parts of Cebu may want to visit at other times of the year.
