Catch a cab or take a shuttle to the Newark International Airport (EWR). Riding the AirTrain is also a convenient option. You can catch the train at major transit hubs in Newark and New York City (including Penn Station) and it will take you directly to EWR.

The flight from EWR to Leonardo da Vinci – Flumicino Airport (FCO) is a little over nine hours long. Once you arrive, you can rent a car or a scooter to make your way into the city, or you can take advantage of the taxi and train service from the airport.

Attractions and tips

It’s a given you’ll be visiting the Colosseum, a prime example of Roman architecture and engineering. The Roman Forum ruins were once the heart of Ancient Rome. In Vatican City, Saint Peter’s Basilica demonstrates the Renaissance architecture for which Rome is famous, and the Apostolic Palace’s Sistine Chapel demonstrates Michelangelo’s artistic brilliance. In Rome’s Trevi District, the famous Trevi Fountain stands 86 feet tall and 161 feet wide.

Rome’s Mediterranean climate offers hot, dry summers combined with cooler, humid winters. The coldest month tends to be January, where temperatures often fall to the mid-50s. However, in July and August, at the pinnacle of the summer, temperatures increase to the 80s, and the humidity makes it feel even hotter; dress cool!
