Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) is located in Shanghai's sprawling financial district, Pudong. To the west of the Huangpu River is Puxi, the more traditional region of Shanghai, which is accessible from Pudong via several tunnels and four major bridges. If you want to get to the Shanghai Zoo or Zhongshan Park, it's easier to get there by airport shuttle, before picking up your rental car.
The shopping district in Xintiandi in the French Concession area, is easily accessible via clearly marked roads, and home to a handful of popular malls, trendy boutiques and high end restaurants like Din Tai Fung. You'll find much of the city's traditional architecture and cultural attractions in the area of Huangpu. The adjacent Jing'an District is where you'll find the ancient Jing'an Temple, dating to the 3rd century. If you prefer, you can park your rental car at People's Square in Huangpu, you can take the metro to Nanjing Road to get there.
The flight from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) averages less than 14 hours. The city's famed Maglev train has two boarding points, Longyang Road Metro Station (about 20 minutes from People's Square) and between Terminals 1 and 2 at the airport, if you wish to try it.
