History of the Washington Capitals

The Washington Capitals were originally founded in 1974 as an expansion team for the National Hockey League. The team started out slow because of their inability to draft players who had real professional experience under their belts. After a disappointing nine years with no playoff appearances, the team made it to the playoffs for the first time in franchise history, only to be eliminated after the first round by the New York Islanders. For the next fourteen years the Capitals would make the playoffs but not get past the first two rounds. However, it was not until 1998 that the team made it to the Stanley Cup Final playing against the defending champion the Detroit Red Wings, ultimately getting swept in four games. In 2004, the Washington Capitals drafted Alexander Ovechkin, who in his rookie season exceeded many expectations set around the league. Even with the addition of star players such as Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom the team was still struggling to produce in the off season.

Bringing Home Their First Cup

In 2014 the team hired Barry Trotz as their new head coach. In just their first year under the leadership of Trotz, the Capitals made it to the playoffs facing off in the first round against the Philadelphia Flyers, and then in the second round against the eventual Stanley Cup Champion for the season- the Pittsburgh Penguins. In the 2017 playoffs the Washington Capitals made it the second round once again against the Penguins. They ended up being defeated in seven games, leading many to believe that the Capitals were incapable of making it out of the second round of the playoffs. The Capitals once again made it to the post season as a top contender in the 2018 playoffs, this time advancing to the Stanley Cup Finals after narrowly defeating the top seeded Tampa Bay Lightning. The Capitals were set to face off against the Vegas Golden Knights, who were not only in their inaugural season but were also exceeding many expectations set around the league. In just five games the Washington Capitals defeated the Golden Knights and hoisted their first ever Stanley Cup. With their win in 2018, the Capitals were the first team in the Washington D.C. area to bring home a championship title in over 26 years. Although following the team’s victory in 2018 Barry Trotz resigned to coach for the New York Islanders, it was under Trotz that the team was able to win their first Stanley Cup of franchise history in 2018. Today with star players from the Cup winning team still on the roster, Capitals fans are expecting big things from the team this upcoming season!
