Blazing a musical trail
The initial spark between Jack Black and Kyle Gass was one of animosity – the two met on the Los Angeles comedy scene and felt a competitive fire. But after a trip to the Edinburgh Fringe for a performance, the pair became fast friends. Gass began teaching Black how to play guitar, and the two found a way to fuse their love of music and comedy together. They recorded a demo, which made its way to HBO and got them an offer to create a show. While Tenacious D the TV show was short lived, Tenacious D the band was just getting started. In 2001 they released their self-titled debut album and went on tour, selling out many of their venues. Their next creative endeavor had two parts – a movie and a soundtrack – dubbed The Pick of Destiny. They supported bands like Metallica, Foo Fighters, Beck, and Pearl Jam. While not all critics understood Tenacious D's style, it resonated with listeners, and "The Last in Line" snagged the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
