The Road to Success
After Don King retired as a musician in 1981, his road band was left without their lead singer. The five remaining artists decided to band together, which was when the band Sawyer Brown was created. The band originally was named Savanna, but they soon realized that there was another up and coming band with a very similar name. Ultimately, they ended up changing their name to Sawyer Brown after flipping through a phone book and seeing that name on one of the first pages they landed on.
The band had worked diligently to make a name for themselves, performing every night for six days a week. Eventually the band auditioned and won a television competition series called Star Search, where they won $100,000 grand prize as well as a recording contract with Capital Records. In 1984 they released their first single “Leona”, which was a success landing in the Top 20 charts. Not long after they released their second single which instantly became a number one hit on the charts, “Step That Step” is credited for being the catalyst that brought the band their fame. Throughout the 80s and 90s they would go on to continue releasing chart topping hits, and eventually began touring to support their music. Towards the end of the 90s the band began to lose their popularity among the country music scene, eventually getting dropped by their label. In 2000 leading member of the band Mark Miller formed his own music label Beach Street Records, where he began to produce and release music for the band. Today the band is still releasing music and touring throughout the United States, get your tickets to a show near you today!
