Leaping Over Past Hurdles

Women's basketball has a long history at Oregon State, stretching all the way back to the end of the 1800s, but it wasn't until 1976 that the program was officially launched. While that first season was a disappointment, with the team only winning five games, the Beavers have steadily made impressive progress. In 1983 the Beavers made their first NCAA Tournament appearance, pushing all the way through to the Sweet Sixteen. They returned several times in the 1990s, but the early 2000s were a time of struggle. All that turned around with the hiring of Coach Scott Rueck in 2010. The Beavers returned to the NCAA Tournament after nearly twenty years. Two years later they showed their new fighting spirit by claiming both the regular season and tournament conference championships. Then they climbed all the way to the Final Four, where they were soundly defeated by the No. 1-seeded and eventual tournament champions, the Connecticut Huskies.
