Classical Ballet with a Twist

Based in Houston, Texas, it is the fifth largest ballet company in the United States. Training more than half of their dancers in house at the Houston Ballet Academy, they perform over 85 shows in a year. With approximately 59 dancers, men and women, they range in experience from an apprentice to a principal.

After years of watching other ballet companies come and perform in their city, the residents of Houston determined that they would like to have their own permanent ballet company. In 1955 they hired retired dancer Tatiana Semenova to begin the process of creating a professional ballet company. She started by creating a ballet school where she began to train dancers from the Houston area as well as recruit experienced dancers from surrounding areas. In 1967 she stepped down from her role and fellow dancer Nina Popova filled her shoes. Nina was more focused on creating a company of professionals, not solely on training future generations. Under her direction, the company performed their first full length performance Giselle. After a few years of performing the company had made a name for themselves in the local area, however to begin attracting more widespread attention they began to host guest stars from more successful companies such as the American Ballet Theatre. After her resigning in 1975, Ben Stevenson took the position and under his direction the company performed over 20 individual full-length ballets.

In 1987, after several years of sharing a home with the Houston Symphony, the company was given their own performing arts venue. The Wortham Theater Center allowed for better performances as there was an improved stage flooring, more spacious warm up areas as well as a larger, more functional stage. With a more stable venue to perform in, the company was able to put on some of their best performances blending together classical ballet with a modern twist. Today the company has toured in more than 31 states and across 19 different countries.

With performances going on all year, there are several ballets to be seen. From The Nutcracker during the holidays to Premieres and Sylvia all season long, there is plenty of enjoyment for everyone! Do not miss out on your chance to see the amazing technique and footwork of these very talented dancers. Get your cheap Houston Ballet tickets here today!
