Finding success playing against the grain
Hootie & the Blowfish's origin story starts in Colombia, when the four founding members were students at the University of South Carolina. The group released their first cassette demo in 1991, which was followed two years later by an EP. While their roots rock sound was the antithesis of the grunge movement of the time, that signature style eventually worked to their advantage when they were signed by Atlantic Records. Cracked Rear View, the band's studio debut, went sixteen-times platinum with singles like "Only Wanna Be with You" and "Let Her Cry." In 1996 Hootie & the Blowfish was awarded the Grammy for Best New Artist. The band continued to release smash hit albums throughout the 1990s and 2000s, until the announcement of their hiatus hit in 2008. Frontman Darius Rucker has focused on his solo career as a country artist, but the band occasionally reunites for charity concerts.
Hootie & the Blowfish is a legendary live act, their heartland groove a perfect vehicle for their signature blues-rock sound.
