A Long Career of Success

Encouraged by her mother Erykah Badu started singing and dancing at an early age and was free-styling on the local radio as a teenager. She dropped out of college to pursue her passion, and one of her demos secured her a spot working alongside hip hop artist D'Angelo. Her debut album, Baduizm, set the music industry buzzing with her talent, and she only grew in popularity from then on with hits such as "On & On," "Tyrone," and "Window Seat." This album was certified three times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Badu’s first live album, Live, was recorded while she was pregnant with her son. It was released in 1997 and reached number four on the US Billboard 200 and number one on the US Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. After taking some time off to raise her son, she released Mama’s Gun in 2000. Three years later she released Worldwide Underground, her third studio album. New Amerykah Part One and New Amerykah Part Two came next in her album releases. Part Two debuted at number four on the US Billboard 200 chart and sold 110,000 copies in its first week.

Fast forward to 2019, in June Badu performed at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound Festival with a new song titled “The Work.” The next day she released the single “Tempted,” a cover of the song by Squeeze in collaboration with James Poyser. This was her first single release since “Phone Down” in 2015.

Erykah Badu manages to effortlessly blend elements from genres across the board, including jazz, funk, R&B, soul, hip hop, even electronica. Her lyrics are rich with introspection and passion as she focuses on everything from identity and insecurity to gang life and institutionalized racism.
