Born in Johannesburg, Dave Matthews grew up as an international child, living in both South Africa and the US. He picked up the guitar at age nine, sparking the passion that would drive him to become one of the most celebrated blues rockers of all time. After high school he moved to Charlottesville, North Carolina, where he started to pursue music seriously. In 1991 he founded the Dave Matthews Band, which went on to be one of the most popular rock jam bands of the early 2000s. In 2003 Dave Matthews released his debut solo album, winning the Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance the following year for "Gravedigger." He's a man of varied interests, including political activism, acting, and even winemaking. Dave Matthews frequently jams with Tim Reynolds, who was crucial in getting Dave on the stage decades ago back in Charlottesville.
