About Chvrches

This Scottish electronic band was formed back in 2011 consisting of Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook and Martin Doherty. Together they've worked to differentiate their electro-pop sound from other artists with Mayberry's soft voice and Cook and Doherty's standout abilities on synthesizers and guitar or bass. They decided to replace the "u" in "churches" to distinguish them from searches, although the name is pronounced the same as church. The group has an interesting background - Mayberry was educated with a four-year law degree as well as a Masters degree in Journalism, she even had a successful journalism career before joining the band. Cook originally started as a member of Aereogramme and The Unwinding Hours while he wrote music for TV and movies. Martin and Cook were friends from school, however Martin's music career started as a member of the indie band The Twilight Sad.

Billboard charts
Perhaps it is this intelligence that has allowed them to mix some of these fresh songs. Chvrches became the first Scottish act since KT Tunstall in 2007 to take over Top Rock Albums. Songs like "Leave A Trace" and "The Mother We Share" have an overwhelming power to put audiences in a musical trance - If you've ever gotten Chvrches tickets to a concert before you can attest to the feeling of the music's ability to make you move. "Leave A Trace" has been a particular success for them as many other EDM artists have taken to remixing the song. "The Mother We Share" was popularized when it was honored to be feature in Scotland's 2014 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony video. Their second album, "Every Open Eye" earned the group's first No.1 spot on Billboard's Top Rock Albums list. The album sold 34,000 copies in its first week.

Big name influences
Their fame came from constant exposure via touring in 2012. They headlined and performed in festivals with influential bands like Passion Pit, Depeche Mode and School of Seven Bells. Their first album took them a while to create because they wanted to make sure they were completely independent. They ensured their record contract would give them as much creative freedom as possible. Inspiration from this band comes from 80's pop stars like Cyndi Lauper, Kate Bush and The Cocteau Twins. Chvrches will be touring all around the world in 2016, so be sure to grab some cheap tickets and catch their performance before they leave the country.
