A British punk rocker takes over the world
Born William Michael Albert Broad in the UK, Billy picked up his stage name from a teacher calling him "idle." Billy Idol and his friend Tony James started the band Generation X in the mid 1970s. Inspired by bands like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, Generation X stood out from the rest of the British punk rock scene. They were featured on the BBC TV show Top of the Pops and produced three albums. After Generation X split up, Billy Idol moved to New York City, becoming one of the stars of the "Second British Invasion" after he released his debut solo album in 1982. His punk attitude was a perfect fit for MTV, which featured his singles "White Wedding" and "Dancing with Myself" frequently. In the 1990s Billy Idol went through a difficult patch, struggling with drugs, getting into a horrific motorcycle accident, and battling with his label. In 2005 Billy Idol jumped back into the music industry with the release of his album Devil's Playground.
