The Backstreet Boys, or BSB, are a pop band from Orlando, Florida. The group includes members AJ McLean, Howie Dorough, Nick Carter, Kevin Richardson, and Brian Littrell. The band was created in 1993 by Lou Pearlman, who placed an ad in a newspaper looking to compose a vocal group. Howie, AJ, and Nick already had a trio in place and were joined by cousins Kevin and Brian shortly after to create the five-piece boy band. Pearlman, the bands manager, decided to call the band The Backstreet Boys after the Backstreet Market in Orlando, which was a popular place for teens to hang out. BSB’s first show was at Sea World in Orlando in May of 1993. They then played at many different malls, schools, galas, and restaurants. The band changed management in fall of their first year and eventually obtained a record deal with Zomba/JIVE Records. The band has faced many legal disputes with their initial manager/record label and eventually settled the matter in the form of a cash payment to the band in 2014. The Backstreet Boys are currently signed with K-BAHN and RCA Records, who they have been much more successful with. The band was initially very popular in Europe but didn’t become successful in the United States until the album Backstreets Back was released in 1997, where it reached number 4 in US charts, selling 4 million copies. This album reached number 1 in Germany, Norway, Switzerland, Finland, The Netherlands, Belgium, and Austria. After this album, the band continued with their success, releasing albums Millennium in 1999, Black and Blue in 2000, The Hits-Chapter One in 2001, Never Gone in 2005, Unbreakable in 2007, This is Us in 2009, and In a World Like This in 2013. The band is scheduled to release their newest album, DNA, in January of 2019. The Backstreet Boys are known for their harmonization and pop/dance music sound, although some of their albums do feature a more acoustic and contemporary feel. They band has been inspired by popular bands like New Kids on The Block and Boyz II Men.
