About Alabama
30 No. 1 hits, 7 multi-platinum albums, and countless awards. If that doesn't justify Alabama's influence to American country and Southern rock, I don't know what will! Alabama is the most successful band in country music with over 75 million records sold! AllMusic credited Alabama with becoming the staple in forming the idea of the country band, commenting that its unlikely any other country group will surpass their success. Alabama tickets go quick! Creators of the Country Band
Randy Owen, Jeff Cook, Teddy Gentry and Bennett Vartanian began to play together professionally in 1972 under the name Wildcountry. Success did not come over night, and the group went through 4 drummers until they landed on Rick Scott in 1974. The first label that signed them, GRT Records, went bankrupt, and Alabama was forced to self-record there first three albums. They sent written letters to program directors nationwide until MDJ Records in Dallas finally signed them. Rick Scott was replaced by Mark Herndon, and their song "I Wanna Come Over" became their first song to finally reach 40 on the Billboard country chart. They gained attention from RCA Records who produced "Tennessee River", the first of over 30 No. 1 hits on Billboard. Their success at RCA gave them exposure on TV shows like The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and The Merv Griffin Show. The next year, Billboard named them New Group for the Year. Alabama went on to release Mountain Music in 1982, and all three of the album's singles reached No. 1. There next album, The Closer You Get..., won a Grammy award for Best Country Performance. Their Greatest Hits album in 1986 went over five times platinum. After 1990, the bands popularity began to decline considerably. However, they still continued to tour and make original music. In 2002, the band announced their American Farewell tour which was so popular that it was extended from 40 to 70 tour dates, finally ending in June 2004. After a long hiatus, the band regrouped without Mark Herndon in 2011. They assembled a benefit concert in Birmingham called Bama Rising in efforts to fund the damage caused by several tornadoes. They played along side other country superstars like Luke Bryan, Sheryl Crow, and Brad Paisley, raising over $2.1 million. They released their first new album in 14 years called Southern Drawl in 2015. To this day, Alabama is seen as a band who paved the way for generations of country artists to come.
