A Snapshot of the Atlanta Scene

Growing up in Atlanta, Shayaa Bin Abraham-Joseph was no stranger to the life depicted in rap songs. He got into trouble at school for having a gun, and as a teenager he became a member of the Bloods gang. After being shot six times on his birthday, a tragic event in which his best friend died, 21 Savage retreated to the studio. In 2014 he released his debut single, which would be followed the next year by his first mixtape. Singles like "No Heart," "X" with Future, and "Bank Account" have made 21 Savage a worldwide sensation. In 2016 XXL put him on the cover as part of the Freshman Class of 2016, heralding a dynamic future for the young artist. With his debut album Issa Album released in 2017 landing on the charts second only to JAY-Z's 4:44, 21 Savage was launched even further to the spotlight. 2017 was also a big year for the rapper, as he achieved his first ever number one song for his collaboration with Post Malone’s single “Rockstar”. He also collaborated with Offset and Metro Boomin on their studio album Without Warning. The following year 21 Savage released his second album entitled I Am> I Was. The album featured over eight other performers including Travis Scott, Post Malone, Childish Gambino, Offset, J. Cole, Lil Baby, and Schoolboy Q. I Am > I Was became 21 Savage’s first number one album, selling well over 100,000 copies.
