A Worldly Sound
Vampire Weekend got its start back in 2006 when the members met each other their freshman year of college at Columbia University. They connected over their mutual love for punk rock and African music, something that they would later incorporate into their overall vibe. They came up with the name Vampire Weekend after Koenig worked on short film dealing with vampires over one of their summer breaks. Starting off they would perform around campus at different events, eventually making their way to bigger venues. While making music was a big priority for the band, it was not a money maker for them just yet. All three members had to work full-time jobs to support their musical dreams. They self-produced their first album Vampire Weekend, with the leading single “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” ranking on the Rolling Stone’s “100 Best Songs of the Year”. With much of their initial success coming from Europe, they set out on their first tour in 2007 throughout the United Kingdom. Eventually they began claiming a following in the United States, appearing on both The Late-Night Show with David Letterman and Saturday Night Live. In 2010 the band released Contra, their second album but their first album to debut in the number one spot on the Billboard 200. They would later go on to perform at legendary festivals such as Coachella, Bonnaroo, and Austin City Limits. Modern Vampires of the City was the band’s second album to debut at the number one spot on the Billboard chart, it would also go on the following year to win the band’s first Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. After remaining relatively quiet for a period, the band announced early in 2019 that they would be releasing another album entitled Father of the Bride, with a North American tour following the release.
