History

The Philadelphia Phillies were founded in 1883 as the Quakers. After a few years however, the team began to go by the name the Philadelphias. In 1890 they shortened their name to be just the Phillies. Early on it became apparent that they were not a winning team, going nearly thirty years before they won their first ever National League Pennant. After winning their first pennant in 1915 the Phillies fell back off the wagon, having only one winning season from 1918 to 1948. Their second pennant came in 1950 after years of developing players within their minor league affiliates. They would go on to face the New York Yankees in their second World Series appearance, only to be swept in four games. After thirty years of winning their second pennant, the Phillies managed to play their way back into contention. In 1980 the team had won their third pennant, nearly losing to the Houston Astros. With the help of Mike Schmidt and Pete Rose they were able to secure their first World Series title in six games against the Kansas City Royals. With that win the Phillies became the last of the original sixteen teams of the league to win a World Series title. Up until 2008 the Phillies would go on to win three more pennants but were never able to secure that second World Series title. After clinching their division title in 2008, they would go on to beat the Milwaukee Brewers, Los Angeles Dodgers, and finally the Tampa Bay Rays to win their second World Series Title. Since the 2008 season the Phillies have gone on to win five divisional titles, rewarding their die-hard fans with substantial success on the field.

Citizens Bank Park

Prior to 2004, the Phillies played their home games at the multipurpose Veterans Stadium. In April of 2004 their new stadium featuring natural grass, classic Philadelphia eats, and rooftop bleachers opened. Citizens Bank Park is located within the northeastern corner of the sports complex, which is also home to Lincoln Financial Field, the Wells Fargo Center and Xfinity Live!. Along with their stellar choices of restaurants within the park, there is also Phanatic Phun Zone, Memory Lane and Phillies Wall of Fame as well as liberty bell. Phillies fans are known to be rambunctious, so you'll be entertained from both the field and the stands!

Rivalries

Said to be one of the hottest rivalries within the National League, any Phillies-Mets game is one that you do not want to miss! Dating back to the 80’s contentions between the two teams was at an all-time high, with brawls breaking out almost every time the two played. The two have also often faced off in the post season however, they have never met in the World Series. Due to the realignment of the league, the Atlanta Braves is another major rival of the Phillies. Although it is not nearly as heated as the Mets rivalry, the two often battle it out for the National League East Championship. As of now the Braves lead the Phillies with more National League East division titles.
