Born a Star

Born on March 30, 1968 in Charlemagne, Quebec, Celine Dion quickly rose to stardom. At an early age Dion began to compose and sing with members of her family, most of the songs being in French. Her brother Jacques sent the recording of his younger sister to famed music manager René Angélil, who almost instantly began working with Celine. Eventually he became her manager, helping her to break into superstardom. Only singing in French, Celine made it her mission to learn English and create an English Album. In 1990 she did just that, after signing on with Epic Records her first English-language album Unison was released. This album was essential in Dion creating a career for herself in the United States.

Celine Dion’s big break in the United States was her collaboration with Disney when she and Peabo Bryson recorded the theme song to “Beauty and the Beast”. This song was number nine on the top 100 list, and it helped make her second album go gold.

Celine Dion performed the song “The Power of the Dream” at the 1996 Olympics. This performance—combined with her three number-one hits—helped solidify her rapidly booming popularity. And the hit singles in question? None other than the iconic “The Power of Love,” “Because You Loved Me,” and “My Heart Will Go On.”

In 1998, Celine Dion received the National Order of Quebec, which is one of the highest honors of the Province. She also has a star with her name on it on both the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Canada’s Walk of Fame.

However, her influence stretches even further beyond that: Celine Dion holds the current Guinness Book of World records spot for the highest selling French album of all time. D’eux sold over 6.4 million copies across the world.

The wildly successful Las Vegas chapter of Celine Dion’s life started when she agreed to perform 200 shows a year, for a period of three years, in the Colosseum at Caesar’s Palace. Celine Dion's Vegas tickets often go for as much as 250 dollars each, in part because she’s the original Vegas diva—this deal paved the way for Britney’s now-famous run at Planet Hollywood.

If you need further proof of her diva-ship, Celine Dion performed Divas Live in 1998 alongside amazing female artists such as Gloria Estefan, Aretha Franklin, Shania Twain, and Mariah Carey. These Celine Dion tickets were hard to obtain, but the live concert aired on VH1 for the world to see—and to rejoice and talk about for years to come.
