Fresh Superstars of a Modern, International K-Pop

BTS was masterminded in 2010 by the producers at Big Hit Entertainment, who carefully auditioned six singers to go along with RM, the rapper who initially caught the eye of the producers. After several adjustments were made to the style of the group as well as the lineup, seven singers were chosen to become the next traditional idol group for the contemporary youth. The boy band's name translates to Bulletproof Boy Scouts, a reflection of the fusion between the bad boy and innocent youth image the band has cultivated.

The group released their first album in tandem with their first single, as the first part of their “school trilogy” series. 2 Cool 4 Skool was released with the leading single “No More Dream” in June of 2013 and peaked at the number five spot on the Korean charts. The album was not an instant success, only selling 145,000 copies. As an attempt to branch out internationally, the boy band would record “No More Dream” in Japanese in 2014. Part two of their trilogy was released in September of 2013, entitled O!RUL8,2. By the end of the year, they raked in several best new artist awards, launching them on a highly decorated career with awards from all around the world. The third and final part of their trilogy was released in 2014, Skool Luv Affair, peaked at the third spot on the Billboard’s World Albums Chart, marking the band’s first appearance on the list. For the remainder of the year the band would release both Japanese and Korean studio albums, which they would later support on their BTS Live Trilogy- Episode II: The Red Bullet tour. BTS continued to gain a following well throughout 2015 and 2016 as they toured throughout most of the Asian countries. The release of their second full-length Japanese album, Wings, helped put the band on the international map. Landing 26th on the Billboard 200 Chart, the K-Pop album broke records selling over 1.5 million copies.

International Sensations

The Korean boy band stepped onto the American music scene in a big way when they performed at the 2017 American Music Awards. This performance was the main catalyst in their international success. Following the performance, they released several new pieces of music, the majority of which have at least been certified as gold by the RIAJ. By the end of 2018, they were named one of the Top Artists by Billboard, just after Drake, Taylor Swift and Imagine Dragons.
