About Tennessee Titans

The Tennessee Titans have come a long way since their beginnings as a charter member of the American Football League. The team was formed in Houston, but they relocated to Memphis years later, moving to Nashville shortly after that.

History of the Titans

Originally called the Houston Oilers, the Titans began playing in 1960 as a charter member of the AFL. They won their first two AFL championships. When the NFL and AFL merged in 1970, the Houston Oilers became part of the NFL. They relocated to Tennessee in 1997 where they competed for one season at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis. After moving to Nashville, they called the Vanderbilt Stadium home, and by 1999 they were finally playing at their current home field as the Titans during its opening year.

The Titans Stadium

Much like the Tennessee Titans, Nashville's Nissan Stadium has been known by a handful of previous names: Adelphia Coliseum, The Coliseum and LP Field. It currently has a capacity of 69,143. Despite the high number, cheap Titans tickets sell quickly for the Nissan Stadium, so check CheapTickets early and often for the best (and cheapest) seats.

When the stadium first opened as Adelphia Coliseum on August 27, 1999, the Titans won a preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons 17-3. The event was attended by 65,729 football fans — almost full capacity — who were lucky enough to have Titan tickets. Since then, its roster has expanded to include Tennessee State Tigers games, the annual Music City Bowl and a slew of notable concerts.

Did you know these facts about the Titans?

  • Former head coach of the Titans, Jerry Glanville, sometimes left Titans football tickets in the name of deceased celebrities at the gate.
  • The Houston Oilers were the first team in American professional football history to play most of their games in a dome.
  • The Titans final season game as the Houston Oilers was played against the Minnesota Vikings in 1998.

The Biggest Titan Rivalries

The Titans have several rivalries, one of which dates back to the 1970s when they were still the Oilers. Here are two of the biggest teams they go head-to-head with.

Titans vs Texans

This rivalry started in 2002 when the NFL carried out an expansion and conference realignment. The NFL put a new team in Houston, established the AFC South, and designated the Texans and Titans as division rivals. In 2010, Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan got into a fist fight with Texans receiver Andre Johnson during a game. Both teams received a foul for the fight as fans with Tennessee Titans tickets watched open-mouthed.

Titans vs Steelers

The rivalry between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tennessee Titans dates back to the 1970s when they were placed in the AFC Central division. They faced each other in the season opener with the Oilers winning 19-7. Four weeks later, when they played again, the Steelers won 7-3. Even after the NFL realigned the two teams into separate divisions in 2002, the heated rivalry continued. Pick up your Titans vs Steelers tickets right here.
