Student travel is pretty much synonymous with budget travel: Making every dollar count is essential. Fortunately, there are plenty of discounts available to students who want to travel near or far from wherever they are.

Flights and hotels

Cheaptickets.com has loads of deals on hotels, hostels, vacation rentals, and flight and hotel packages. You can purchase event tickets, plus get a student-specific discount of 18% off when you enter your student ID here.

Student discount cards

The $25/year ISIC (International Student Identity Card) more than pays for itself, with over 160,000 discounts on transportation, shopping, restaurants, cultural institutions and entertainment in more than 130 countries. The card’s especially crucial in Europe, where you won’t likely get a student or youth discount without it.

The Student Advantage Card, $30 a year, offers similar discounts at U.S. based businesses, including Greyhound (10% off travel and shipping services), AMC Theatres (40% off prepaid movie tickets), and lots of local and chain restaurants.

Bus and rail

If you’re between the ages of 12-27, discounts of up to 25% are available for first- and second-class Eurail passes, which provide train travel among 33 European countries. No proof of student status is required, and the passes also provide discounts to attractions, ferries and more, depending on the country.

Shortline/Coach USA offers discounts on popular college bus routes. The amount varies by route; students need valid IDs to purchase discounted tickets.

Similarly, Amtrak offers students ages 13–25 with valid ID 15% off some fares in the Midwest, New York and California.

Activities

Colorado Ski Country USA (CSCUSA) member resorts, which include Aspen Snowmass, Copper Mountain, Telluride, Steamboat and Winter Park, offer season pass deals, multiday lift ticket packages, discounted lessons, discounted dining and much more to college students. Some resorts even offer free season passes.

Groupon’s Select Student Program offers college students extra discounts for activities, food, drinks and services in any participating city they’re in. It’s free to sign-up, and students get an additional 25% off for the first six months of membership, and 15 % off thereafter.

Regal, AMC and Cinemark theater chains across the United States all offer student discounts on movie tickets. Check ahead for your particular theater: Discounts vary by location and showtime, and you’ll have to buy your tickets in person with a valid student ID.

Many Major League Baseball teams offer special student pricing. The Boston Red Sox offer $9 student tickets when you register here; $10 upper bleacher reserve seats are available to students at Pittsburgh Pirates home games. Check other individual team websites for more discount offers.

Other discounts

FedEx offers students 20% off the shipping of packages, and 30% off document shipping with a valid ID—just in case you aren’t able to fit all those souvenirs in your suitcase.

Stay up to date on news around the world wherever you are with student discounts from The New York Times  (a basic subscription is free for four weeks; then $1 a week thereafter); The Wall Street Journal  ($4 a month for a digital subscription; $10 a month for print and digital); and The Washington Post ($5 a month for college students).
