Sandusky, Ohio, is best known as the home of Cedar Point Amusement Park. Along with the Cedar Point Marina and neighboring Kelley's Island, South Bass Island, Middle Bass Island and North Bass Island, the city has become a popular place for travelers during the summer months.
Sandusky is located midway between Toledo and Cleveland, with transportation available by road as well as Amtrak, Greyhound and local ferries. Most visitors stay at one of the Cedar Fair hotels while in Sandusky. The ferries connect guests staying on the mainland with the neighboring islands, where cars are generally not permitted. In addition to Cedar Point, other attractions include the outdoor Soak City water park, which operates during the summer. Great Wolf Lodge, Monsoon Lagoon, Castaway Bay and Kalahari are indoor water parks that are open year-round.
Historically, Sandusky was an important stop on the Underground Railroad. It also served as a port for trade between the U.S. and Canada. During the winter, Sandusky gets lake effect snow from Lake Erie. In the summer, the area has a humid continental climate, which may include chilly breezes coming in from the lake. In 2011, Forbes magazine ranked the city as the number one place to live inexpensively in the United States.
