Not what I expected from this brand

Sorry to moan, I don’t often! Despite travelling extensively when I worked I never stayed in a Malmaison before. So, now retired, I was disappointed on arriving at the hotel-recommended NCP car park to see the very high charges. These turned out to be only-partly mitigated by the voucher from the hotel reception. We were going out in the car in the evening to meet friends, so in total our 19 hour overnight stay cost us £24. The standard room we booked was a good size, with plenty of storage spaces and everything as stated in the description. Unfortunately when we came to showering we found the shower only produced a red-hot trickle which refused all attempts at improvement. Fortunately there was a bath. We reported it to reception on our way out and were assured it would be fixed. On return there was no mention of repair, but in the room it was clear someone had looked at it so we assumed it was now OK, wrongly it turned out the following morning. Continental Breakfast was a pretty limited selection, the pastries ran out before we’d had any and weren’t topped up even though several guests had come in after us. On checkout we mentioned the shower again (different receptionist), to be fair she offered to deduct anything we’d had from the minibar, but we hadn’t had anything. So I’ve waited a couple of weeks to write this review just in case they send me a voucher, but no, nothing at all.

I got a free upgrade without asking, which was nice, and the whole place had a pleasing boutique feel. Very close to the station was also a bonus.

    Convenient situation

Old Station Hotel revamped in dark tones throughout. Very good situation right opposite the station and close to Broad Street shops, The Oracle and Town Museum. Room was comfortable with bath and separate shower. But decorations all in black which was oppressive. Couldn't work out how to alter the heating, so room got hot. Couldn't open the window even a crack for some fresh air. Bar meals are available. We were the only two in the bar but bartender would not turn off the noise which he called music. Very loud and monotonous if was. If have to stay in Reading again will look for somewhere else.
