Most people visit Puerto Plata to relax on the beach. However, the city is one of the best places in the Dominican Republic to get a taste of the country's culture. The city is home to sites like the Museo Del Amber, Fortaleza San Felipe and Cristo Redentor.
The majority of visitors will arrive in the city via Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP), which has flights to most major cities in North America. Many visitors also choose to book a private transfer to their hotel. There are a number of transportation options in the city, including taxis and a public transit system that utilizes buses run by the local government. Highway 5 runs through town, and many hotels are located in the City Center and Aguas Negras neighborhoods.
Puerto Plata is located in the rain forest, so it experiences warm and moderately wet weather year-round. When you go to Plata Playa, expect highs around 80 degrees year-round. If you happen to be in Puerto Plata in February or March, you don't want to miss the Dominican Carnival celebrations. These take place every Sunday for several weeks in Puerto Plata, and they feature music, food festivals, street dancing and parades. There are also free live musical performances in Central Park every Sunday afternoon.
