Featured two consecutive years in Historic Society tours, this outstanding home is one of Forest Grove’s most distinctive historic properties. A rarely-seen Italianate-Victorian, the Smith House is spacious, high-ceilinged, and situated in a park-like setting in Forest Grove’s Clark Historic District. This magnificent 1876 home has been meticulously renovated, and now offers state of the art utility and comforts while retaining the patina of gracious Nineteenth Century living throughout. This makes it uniquely suited for family gatherings in a delightfully photographic setting. From the expansive kitchen that features an island repurposed from a Circa 1875 square grand piano and two gas ranges; to the elegant formal dining room complete with fireplace and sweeping buffet; memorable family banquets can be served with ease. The dining room flows into a music parlor complete with an antique pump organ, mini-grand piano, and PA system for mealtime merriment. The family can then gather on the expansive front porch that is perfect for group photos. Children can retire to the upstairs playroom that features a large screen TV for family movies and a stockpile of games and toys. Meanwhile, bookworms can retreat to the extensive classic library loft. More active adventurers can jump on one of our bicycles to enjoy the popular paved nature trail behind the Smith House that gently winds through a secluded bird sanctuary, over Gales creek, and into the Historic Painter’s Woods and other old town districts of Forest Grove. For the less adventurous, simply enjoy a game of croquet on the generous front lawn in this quiet neighborhood. Then take a short stroll down Main Street, past giant sequoias, to enjoy dessert and coffee in one of our many superb local eateries; take in some community theater; or just peruse local art gallery or antique shops in downtown Forest Grove. In summer, enjoy local fresh produce and treats every Wednesday at the local Farmer’s Market. In fall, attend the Oregon Air Show in nearby Hillsboro Airport. Year-round, attend one of many functions at Pacific University -- all within mere blocks of the home. Hollywood buffs are delighted that Forest Grove’s unique small-town charm has been discovered and television episodes have been filmed in locations just minutes away. For fishermen or water sport enthusiasts, picturesque Hagg Lake awaits, and the allure of the 21-mile Vernonia trail entices more serious bikers – both a mere 15 minutes away. For wine-tasting enthusiasts, we are located on the virtual edge of a wine-lovers’ dream – a plethora of picturesque wineries within minutes. Why is the Smith House a Forest Grove treasure? Dining: The Smith House features a large dining room and front parlor, which can accommodate up to 20 for sit-down or buffet meals. China, silverware, linens, platters, bread baskets, serving dishes and utensils, coffee urn, water glasses and pitchers are provided upon request. The large dining room buffet is equipped with power plugs, and warming implements can be provided upon request. For added winter charm, the dining room features a fully functional wood-burning fireplace. Kitchen: The fully-equipped gourmet kitchen features a unique island made from a repurposed 1875 square grand piano. The kitchen is furnished with a gas range, microwave, dishwasher, crockpot, vegetable steamer, popcorn popper, four-slice toaster, espresso/drip coffee maker, and more; as well as all the necessary cooking and eating utensils. Family room: The family room adjoins the kitchen and features a large screen television and a cozy gas-heating stove. The sofa opens into a queen bed and adjoins both the full yellow Bathroom and the second doorway to the wrap-around porch. Free-standing screens can be provided upon request, so that this room could be repurposed into an additional bedroom-bathroom suite to accommodate additional overnight guests. The Play Room: The play room is the kitchen attic, connected by a back staircase. It features children’s books, Legos, games, toys, a pack-and-play, and an additional large flat screen TV with DVD player. There are also three single beds in the play room, one a fold out studio bed, and two captains’ beds with storage drawers beneath. These beds both expand to full size, however room size allows only one full and one twin. The Library: This reading and chess nook is a beautiful relaxing loft with floor-to-ceiling, extensively stocked bookshelves; a window seat; comfy chair; and a chess board, table, and chairs. The Guest Room: The double bed features a memory foam mattress, a hypo-allergenic down-alternative feather bed beneath, and down-alternative duvet and cover on top. This level of comfort coupled with the lovely antiques and vintage decor is tranquil and relaxing. The Master Suite: The plantation-style queen bedroom sets off the high ceilings; and features a memory foam mattress, a hypo-allergenic down-alternative feather bed beneath, and down-alternative duvet and cover on top. An archway connects a sink room which leads to a separate room with a private lavatory and marble shower. That room also boasts a charming window seat and window overlooking the garden as well as cabinetry well stocked with extra towels, quilts, linens, toilet paper, and more. The Yellow Bathroom: This is the main floor bathroom, which could also double as another guest bath should guests avail themselves of the fold-out bed in the family room. This bright and cheery space features a claw-foot tub. The Blue Bathroom: The upstairs guest bath is in close proximity to the guest and play-rooms. Pristine blue and white provides a tranquil setting for an exquisite bubble bath in this beautiful room. Garden: In the summertime enjoy fresh blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, blackcaps, grapes and cherries as they are available. Enjoy squirrel watching year-round. Fresh eggs from our free-range chickens are available year-round as well. Have a couple for breakfast! Other details – The property is fenced and equipped with a state of the art security system with 16 outdoor cameras that can be monitored locally on the television screen or checked remotely at any time by the owners. For your privacy, there are no indoor cameras. Why is Forest Grove a great home base for your visit to Oregon? All its local charms considered, Forest Grove an excellent launching pad for a larger-scaled experience. Because of its central position in Oregon’s Northwestern corner, the state’s most splendid attractions are within one to two hours’ drive or less in any direction. We are twenty-five miles from Downtown Portland; sixty miles from the Oregon Coast; seventy miles from Mount Hood; seventy miles from Multnomah Falls and the breathtaking Columbia Gorge; seventy miles from Oregon State University, home of the Beavers. And in between those locations? Oregon, Oregon, Oregon. Everything that makes our state one of the most beautiful places on the earth.     Family gathering for wedding

    What a beautiful home full of personal and historic touches. Everyone wanted a kitchen just like the one here. Don and Elena were great answering all my questions quickly and went out of their way to make sure all our needs were taken care of. And so friendly! The neighborhood is a great place to take a walk and town is just a few blocks away . It was perfect for our large group in town to celebrate my daughter's wedding.       Absolutely Magical and a Perfect Getaway

      Hard to summarize all of the wonderful little details and thoughtful touches for making the stay a memorable experience. The pictures while great don’t capture how intriguing and historical yet updated and comfortable the house is! We had young kids who absolutely loved the upstairs play area and we were able to hear them and hang out in the giant updated kitchen. Everything was well stocked with eggs fresh bread butter lots of helpful snacks spices and everything needed to make delicious meals. You could spend hours just walking around exploring the art antiques and books in every single room. The landscaping is gorgeous and all of the neighborhoods are great for walking or biking. We were disappointed to leave and easily could have settled in for a week. It’s amazing Elena and Don choose to share such a special location. Don’t pass on this one!

        The house was beautiful and exceeded our expectations.

        The owners have really thought about everything. The house is very well equipped and the garden is beautiful. We had a fantastic time and wish we could stay longer.

        This house was an incredibly charming, historic, and beautiful home that felt really special to stay in. It was huge and spacious, decorated throughout with historic furniture that made it feel like a classic old home, while still being very cozy and comfortable. There were plenty of beds for our large wedding party guests. We really enjoyed our stay, it was definitely a one of a kind experience that we will remember fondly!
