We travel the world at air b&b's and this was one of my favorite homes. The home is extremely well cared for and up to date with all the amenities including a canoe, kayaks and paddle boards. The pictures are accurate and the layout of the home was very well designed. The home is about 100 yards and across the street from the lake and a small gravel boat ramp for canoes and light boats. Highlands lake was great. The area is quite and wooded with small lake homes/cabins, and a network of small roads around the lake. The area seemed extremely safe. The water is clear and the fishing and swimming were a blast (note there isn't a public beach near... we paddled out to a swimming platform). The home is about 15 minutes from Windham which has a few small family run restaurants, a good BBQ restaurant, a couple coffee shops, grocery stores/Walmart, some lobster shacks (we tried The Fisherman's Catch and liked it), and best for our kids - a nice ice cream stand (Ice Cream Dugout) and a small amusement area (Seacoast Adventure) with suspension obstacle course, go carts, and mini-golf. Windham is surrounded by a few larger lakes, one of which (Sebago) has a large state park with a nice swimming beach. We checked out Freeport, about a 30 min drive, for shopping and LL Bean and found a delicious pastry shop (European Bakery and Tea Room). Portland is about a 25-30 minute drive for nicer restaurants, a very nice art museum, coffee shops, and shopping. I recommend having some lobster along the waterfront and Gorgeous Gelato was the best I've had in the states (it rivaled Spain and Italy)! We didn't make it to the Portland head lighthouse but it's on our todo list. We really enjoyed our stay and I am already thinking about when we can return! Thanks Julia!
