Best time to take a vacation to Playa del Carmen

Best Time to Go

Like much of the Caribbean, Playa del Carmen vacations are much more popular during the winter because of its warm temperatures. At the same time, however, you can find some great Playa del Carmen getaways at lower prices during the spring and summer. September, October and November are the rainiest months, but the rest of the year is quite dry by comparison. If you enjoy deep-sea fishing, it is best to come during these drier months to ensure greater catches and avoid rough sea conditions.

Insider tips for Playa del Carmen travel

Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos is closer to Playa del Carmen than Cancun and has calmer waters, making it a much more relaxing place to fish or swim.

Tulum

No Playa del Carmen travel is complete without experiencing the ancient Maya ruins of Tulum.

Cozumel

Visit Cozumel, a small island off the coast of Playa del Carmen known for its great snorkeling due to its proximity to Great Maya Reef and abundance of sea life.

Coco Bongo Club

Enjoy live entertainment at The Coco Bongo Club nightclub that features everything from music and dancing to circus-themed shows.

Downtown Shopping

Walk a couple of blocks from 5th Avenue, or La Quinta, downtown to find local shopping without the typical tourist souvenirs.

Playa del Carmen highlights

Mayan Ruins

If you like archaeology and ancient history, visiting the ancient Mayan ruins is a must on your Playa del Carmen travels. The ruins are scattered all over the surrounding area, but for the top spots, head to Tulum and Coba to check out the best of the best, including the amazing Chichen Itza.

Cheap dining

Empanadas Luis is the bees knees for mouth-watering enchiladas on your Playa del Carmen travels. Ty Coz serves up fresh sandwiches for as little as 15 pesos, and Taco Paco offers big tacos for the teeny price of 20 pesos. And don't forget to check out the fruit and juice stands that serve the best of Playa del Carmen's fresh produce.

Cenotes

For an extra-special Playa del Carmen vacation experience, head to the many cenotes around the area. Chac Mool, 14 miles south of Playa del Carmen is great, as are Ponderosa and Cristalino. For the advanced, make sure to visit Taj Mahal and Chikin Ha. Entry and swimming and snorkeling privileges cost around $5, making it a fun and affordable way to spend a day.

Quinta Avenida

Not quite as ritzy as the one in New York City, this 5th Avenue has twice the charm and ambience. Shop along the strip's boutiques and souvenir stores, and dine at the open-air restaurants that offer the best Mexicana for bargain prices. You can also find great deals on silver jewelry at the many stalls in the area.

Beaches

Some of the best beaches in the world can be found in Playa del Carmen. Travel to the always-packed sands of Main Beach for a party vibe and stunning waters, or hit the shores of Coco Beach and Mamitas Beach for a relaxed atmosphere and equally gorgeous surrounds. The beaches are also perfect for a more adventurous Playa del Carmen vacation, with snorkeling and diving galore.
