    About this property

Lake Arenal-stunning Views of the Lake, Volcano and Jungle

Romantic Peñas Blancas chalet in El Millon, near Arenal Volcano National Park
Our 'Castle in The Clouds' is just seven km from Volcano Arenal, perched 700m above sea-level overlooking the volcano, rainforest, pastures and Lake Arenal and close to many of the most popular amenities the region has to offer . Wake to the sound of howler monkeys, toucans and parrots and enjoy your first cup of locally-grown coffee in our covered gazebo or in the 25 sq. metre sunroom. Our home features a splash pool to cool off after a busy day of eco-adventuring. You can walk to many attractions in the village, including several quaint local restaurants. The home features casual dining indoor or out, hot water throughout, and stunning views from every room. It is completely equipped with a full-sized fridge with ice-maker, gas stove, microwave and blender and includes twice-weekly cleaning service (more often optional on request). An optional personal laundry service is also available. Active or passive, this is the perfect home base for your Arenal vacation! Although our small stretch of the road is usually in good shape it is steep and the road coming into El Castillo is very rough. We highly recommend a 4x4 vehicle for all your excursions in Costa Rica. We now feature a paved driveway, a separate covered Gazebo (perfect for al fresco dining) and the yard has been completely enclosed with a custom-made 5' stone and wrought-iron fence. You'll enjoy our garden paradise yard featuring a variety of local and tropical plants designed to maximize your Costa Rica experience. Now-Book Local Tours and Attractions: Hannah and Tomas, our on-site hosts can help you book many local tours and attractions for you on your arrival, saving you the hassle of running around. From zipline tours, hot springs spas and volcano hikes to a horseback ride to a real eco-farm, you can be as busy or as relaxed as you like, but you'll never run out of things to do in the area. Just ask when you arrive and we can make recommendations and reservations for you. July 2011: If you catch the new reality show 'Love in the Wild' airing on CTV in Canada or NBC in the US, you'll experience life in El Castillo. They were filming the series when we visited in March and almost all of the scenes were shot in and around our little neighbourhood. This house stole my heart!

This property was so peaceful and beautiful. The views of the lake and volcano were amazing, the house was clean and the hosts were BEYOND helpful with everything. My only complaint was that we didn't have enough time there! I would come back in a heart beat :)

      5/5 Excellent

Absolutely wouldn’t stay anywhere else in the Arenal volcano area.

My girlfriend and I totally lucked out with this rental. El Castillo is the best village to stay in around the lake and volcano. This is not a highly touristy area but it is the closest to all of the activities you would want to do. Everything is close!!! If you like privacy, horses, cows, wildlife and are looking for the most amazing view you could imagine, this property is the place to stay. When you are home you will spend a lot of your time in the enclosed balcony on the second level. The pool was a little cool for our liking but we were there during the rainy season so it was expected. That said, we were busy all day so we wouldn’t have swam much anyways. Places we visited: Mistico - amazing. 30 minutes Arenal Lodge - amazing 20 minutes Arenal 1968 - amazing 20 minutes Fortune waterfall - beautiful 45 minutes Ecothermals - WOW - 40 minutes Arenal Lake - very peaceful - 10 minutes Hiking from house - gorgeous - 0 minutes Cocoa tour - worth it - 2 minutes Places to eat Essence Arenal - our favorite - 2 minutes Burritos - forget name - delicious 3 minutes Johns Pizza - delicious - 10/15 minutes Fusion - don’t go Assorted sodas - all are good If there is a bad review for this place, ignore it. You will not be disappointed.

          Amazing views!

We loved our stay at this property! It was great to stay outside of the touristy areas and be able to experience a small Costa Rican town. The restaurants recommended were fantastic - we went to John’s Pizza and watched monkeys while we ate lunch. The house itself was great. Well stocked, clean, and comfortable for a family of five. Due to bed capacity, one of the kids had to sleep on the upstairs balcony but thought it was more comfortable than sleeping in the house. The pool was great and kept my kids entertained each morning and evening. If we ever return to Costa Rica, we would definitely stay here again!

          5/5 Excellent

            Great house for family

We stayed in the house for 4 nights and 3 days this August (2019) with our 2 kids (Age 5 and 8 years) The house is up on a hill in the little town of El Castillo. The drive from La Fortuna to the house is about 30-45 ish minutes. A 4 wheel drive vehicle is a must, as the road to the house is pretty steep and partly unpaved. We made the trip up and down the road multiple times a day, at night and in the rain with no problem though. We loved being in this quite town. The house has an incredible view of lake arenal and the volcano. The house has two bedrooms upstairs, each with a bed and bathroom. Only downside is one of the bedrooms doesnt have coverings on one of the windows. There is a gorgeous patio off the upstairs bedrooms that is screened in. Downstairs in a living room, 1/2 bath, fully stocked kitchen and dining table. Living room has a fold out couch/futon. Probably ok for a young kid to sleep on, but i doubt an adult would be super comfortable. We went grocery shopping in La Fortuna (super christian #4) and had breakfast/some lunches at home. I was worried about the lack of AC but with the screened in windows/doors open we were not hot at all. There is no washer dryer but hosts can arrange laundry if needed. If we had stayed longer I would have taken them up on that. Hosts were awesome at arranging a tour guide (Garbielle) for us. We took a tour through the arenal observatory lodge and mistico hanging bridges with our guide. We saw so much more and had a great time with these personalized tours. We also took their rec of a horse back riding tour with Lilander (stable just down the road) and that was a ton of fun, even though it rained! We would go back in a heart beat! Highly recommend!

            4/5 Good

              The views!

This was a lovely home. Clean, spacious and the hosts were helpful. The views of the volcano and lake are absolutely amazing - can’t be beat! The solitude was lovely, with birds chirping and cows visiting us every morning. My kids loved the (small) pool and watching birds and ants in the beautiful gardens. The only trade off of course is that you are a bit further away from any town, but there are restaurants really close so that made it easy. The road here is rough and steep - I would say 4wd is a must and it means we didn’t walk many places. There is no laundry but the hosts were happy to do it for an extremely low cost so that was not an issue. Great place overall - would recommend!
