Hotels in Oranjestad
The southern Caribbean island of Aruba has some of the world's best beaches. Aruba has preserved some of its original Dutch colonial architecture, which can be seen throughout the capital city of Oranjestad. The city has several large resorts and smaller, family-run accommodations. It is home to the island's main shopping district, a marina and most of the local government buildings and residences. The beaches in the city are a great place for water sports such as snorkeling, boat rides, parasailing and fishing. The island interior boasts Arikok National Park, a desert preserve with striking views of the sea.
The island of Aruba is nearly 20 miles long and 6 miles wide. Unlike many Caribbean islands, it has a dry climate. Queen Beatrix International Airport (AUA) is located in the city of Oranjestad. Visitors can get around the city by walking, biking or a taking a taxi. Many hotels and resorts offer special transportation for exploring the rest of the island. Rental cars are also available.
Hints and tips
Oranjestad offers many carnivals and festivals throughout the year, including the Annual Carnival Celebration and the Soul Beach Music Festival. The 7 mile strip of beach along the west coast has many resorts and is packed with activity, while the beaches on the windward coast are more secluded. All beaches are open to the public.
