Alternative ideas include a day at Twinlakes Park, a ride on the Great Central Railway or cycling and boating at Rutland Water. Market towns within a similar 30-minute drive include Melton Mowbray home to the famous pork pie. With market day on Tuesday, the delightful Georgian town of Stamford and the Elizabethan Burghley House, (Historic Houses) with its famous horse trials in September, Newark on Trent with its ruined castle and National Civil War Centre and Oakham, the Capital of Rutland and Rutland Water ideal for water pursuits and bird watching. Under an hour’s drive are two of England’s finest cities, Nottingham where the National Justice Museum, recently renovated Nottingham Castle and the City of Caves await you or delight in a spot of shopping and Lincoln with its magnificent cathedral, castle, and cobbled streets/independent shops.
