Midland, Texas, was founded in 1881 as a stopping point midway between Fort Worth and El Paso, on the Texas and Pacific Railroad. More recently, the community has earned recognition as being home of former First Lady Laura Bush, and for its ongoing oil boom. While in Midland, visit the McCormick Gallery at Midland College and explore its collection of pottery, sculpture and paintings. From there, you can enjoy a performance of the Midland-Odessa Symphony & Chorale at the Permian Basin performance house. Other favorite places to explore include the Children's Museum, Museum of the Southwest, and the Marian W. Blakemore Planetarium.
Interstate 20 is Midland's major thoroughfare. Midland is also serviced by the Midland International Air and Space Port (MAF) for aviation, and the Midland-Odessa Urban Transit District bus system. Stop by the Turner Mansion neighborhood and admire the area's diverse architectural styles, and stay in one of the many bed and breakfast operations housed in the area's mansions.
Midland's history is intertwined with the oil and natural gas industry. To learn more, visit the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum. The area's nightlife takes place around Wall Street and the Midland College neighborhood. Be sure to enjoy the Texas barbecue and Tex-Mex fare, and relax with a glass of traditional Southern sweet tea.
