As the cultural capital of the Yucatán Peninsula, Mérida, Mexico, has a rich history that is highlighted in the city's many museums. The Catedral de San Ildefonso was originally built in 1598 on the site of a Mayan temple. Visitors who would like to learn more about the area's past can head to the Museo Regional de Antropologia, which is housed in the Palacio Cantón.
The museum has exhibits from several Mayan cities, such as Chichén Itzá, Uxmal and Mayapan. At the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya, which is just a short drive from Mérida, travelers can view more than 500 exhibits that represent Mayan art and culture.
The town has a small airport that is only 20 minutes away from Mérida's Plaza Grande. Travelers can also rent a car at the airport in Cancún or Mexico City. Because Mérida is the bus hub of the Yucatán Peninsula, transportation can easily be obtained between the city and other areas, such as Chiapas and Chichén Itzá.
Visitors who plan on touring the archaeological sites around Mérida may want to opt for a rental car, and those who intend to spend their days in the city may fare better walking or taking a bus to tour the pleasant historic thoroughfares.
