Macau is a unique destination, in that you can see the evidence of Portuguese occupation almost everywhere you go. A large section of Macau has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the architecture is reminiscent of what you would expect to find in Europe. For a quick tour of Macau's historical sites, check out the Macau Museum, the Fort, and the Sao Paulo Cathedral, which are all within walking distance of one another. Today, many people from the mainland flock to Macau, as it is illegal to gamble in any other Chinese territory. Macau lights up at night, and the views are spectacular.
In the past, most people traveled to Macau by flying into Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) and taking a short ferry ride to the island. However, Macau International Airport (MFM) is becoming a hub for low cost flights, and many people fly there directly. Macau is not a particularly big place, and it is possible to navigate the entire city on foot. Other transportation options include taxis and rickshaws. Those who are transiting to the mainland can cross the border into Zhuhai on foot. Hotels can be found throughout the city; pick one close to the attractions you want to visit.
A Portuguese overseas territory for many years, Macau was transferred back to Chinese control in the late 1990's. It is currently a Special Administrative Region of China, and the local government is given a great degree of autonomy.
