Centrally located in the Hill Country of the Lone Star State, Killeen is a haven for those in tune with the rural lifestyle, but also offers a variety of cultural attractions. Rodeos and stock car races are regular events while the Mayborn Planetarium on the campus of Central Texas College is a unique educational experience. Stillhouse Lake provides swimming opportunities amidst its more serene surroundings.
When flying into Killeen, you'll arrive at Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport (GRK) where transportation options include rental cars, taxi and cab services and the HOP, which is operated by the Hill Country Transit District. The close connection the city has with Fort Hood can be seen with two museums devoted to the United States 1st Cavalry Division and 3rd Armored Cavalry, respectively. The city's downtown district is listed in the National Register of Historic Places due, in part, to its architecture.
From late May to mid-September, Killeen's average temperature is 89 degrees, peaking in the first weeks of August. The cold season begins in late November for three months with the average high temperature in the low 60s and nighttime lows dipping into the 40s. First coming into existence in 1882, Killeen began its affiliation with the military in 1942 with the creation of Camp Hood.
