Nice room in old apartment block
Gvardeyskaya Hotel is right outside the center of Kazan. You will need to take a bus/tram (half an hour) or taxi (~130 roubles). The building is an old apartment block that has been converted into a hotel. My room was with shared bathroom, which meant that there were two rooms inside the same apartment, and I was given an extra key to use for my room, which had a fridge, water boiler, TV, closet, large work desk and large new windows that opened. The neighborhood is not very interesting, so you might not want to spend much time there, but it has a very good, large and popular restaurant 10 minutes' walk away, and a supermarket is located 100 m away. My room was about 20 m2 and it was cleaned every day. Bathroom and toilet was adjacent to the entrance hall and would have been shared, except there was no-one living in the other room so I had it for myself. I stayed four nights and spoke to at least three of the receptionists, and they all spoke English fairly well. Whenever I needed a taxi, they called on my behalf, and it never took more than 5 minutes for it to arrive. The staff was very friendly and helpful. In sum, it's a good option if you don't need to stay in the very center of Kazan, and want a more apartment-like place.
