    About this property

Forest Edge Overlook - Borders Nat'l Forest - Last Cabin on Private Dead End Rd

    Historic cabin in Hinton
Please Read The Entire Description: This is now our most popular cabin. The cabin has been updated inside. We've not done much of anything to the outside of the cabin since we bought it. Forest Edge Overlook, sits at the end of a private dead end road that directly borders the George Washington National Forest. The cabin has 3 bedrooms, one bathroom and a loft (with low ceilings) with several 6 mattresses in it (two twin, 3 full and one queen). The bathroom has a garden size soaker tub/shower with real river rock walls hand picked from our land on the river below. The kitchen has all wood cabinets and stainless steel appliances and a real river rock back splash. The counter tops were custom made out of hickory and fit with the decor perfectly. The front door is even dutch style, which opens up from both the top and the bottom. This place has character!!! You will not find this with any new construction property! This being said, it is not new construction and is an old cabin and therefore it will have quirks and such, but isn't that why you wanted to come stay at a cabin in the first place? :) Please note that looking at the description on the phone does not show you all of the descriptive characteristics next to the amenities. you will have to look on a computer to see all detail of amenities. Examples of this include heaters being floor heaters not central heat, AC being window unit not Central AC, fire pit and wood stove wood is available for a fee. These are examples but are not limited to these things. The large 80+ year old stone fireplace is amazing and is the centerpiece of the living room and extends all the way up through the roof. There is currently a wood stove in the fireplace and there is a glass door so that you can see the fire. The ceiling in the loft is not very high, but most adults should be able to fit. The loft is not recommended for kids under 4 years of age simply because you have to climb a ladder to access it. Outside there is a nice size deck from which you can see into the valley below when there are no leaves. During the Summer months the leaves hide the cabin from the rest of the world below. The cabin does have a wood stove and an outdoor fire pit. Firewood may be purchased in advance (please do not bring your own firewood whereas it can spread the Emerald Ash Borer). Next to the cabin is an old cobbler shop which we hope to remodel someday (it currently has rather unattractive old asphalt red shingle siding) as a honeymoon suite or getaway of its own. We have not done any landscaping to the outside of the cabin and the grounds are rustic... the two garages also need to be cosmetically remodeled. We are also planning on adding more parking and removing an old stone wall to make room for more vehicles... there is currently enough room for 4 vehicles. We do allow for one night stays, but there is two night minimum for weekend stays (either Friday and Saturday night or Saturday & Sunday nights). Pets are welcome, but we do require a Pet Fee of $65 per pet. No pets on furniture or linens. Forest Edge Overlook is a great place to see the stars. On clear nights, you can see thousands of stars overhead. It is a beautiful sight. Check in time is 4:00 pm until 7 pm eastern and checkout is 11 am. Early check-ins, before 4, or Late check-ins, after 7 pm, and late checkouts, after 11 am, require a $75 per hour fee. Please ask in advance about late check-ins. Late check-ins without prior approval, before booking, will be cause for cancellation of the reservation without refund. There will be a charge of $30 an hour for guests arriving more than 30 minutes later than the arrival time that they give us on the day of arrival. Arrival times must be sent in the message thread upon booking. Government issues photo ID, driver's license or passport, must be provided 7 days before arrival or reservation will be cancelled without refund. Rental agreement must be signed 7 days before arrival or reservation will be cancelled without refund. For same day arrivals within one hour of booking. If these things are not turned in by time due, the reservation will be cancelled without refund. No smoking in the cabin. No beer pong or Hookahs. Noise must kept to a minimum and quiet hours are 9 pm to 9 am. No drugs. The house can fit 16 people. However, at least some would need to be children. Remember, there is only 1 bathroom. Pets are welcome at all of our properties. If you or someone in your group is allergic to pets or anything else (detergent, air fresheners, etc), please let us know in advance so we can discuss this prior to your booking and then also prior to your arrival. Because this is a real cabin, there are things you should expect to find in an older real cabin such as spider webs (we clean them for every guest but they do reappear quickly), ladybugs, insects, critters & stink bug(s) during certain times of the year. Please let owners know if you have issues with these things so we can take care of them. Also, please let owners know within 15 minutes of arrival or when they occur if there are any issues with the property (cleaning, electric, water, etc.). No refund will be given but owners will try to resolve problem as soon as possible. All pet fee(s), early check-in or late check-out, firewood or extra person fees are not refundable once paid. Pre-approvals and accepted reservation request do not include pet, extra person, firewood, or late/early check-in/out fees. Failure to show up/check in or contact owner before day of arrival will result in cancellation without refund. Host reserves the right to rebook property if guest does NOT contact owner. Illegal drugs will not permitted on our properties under any circumstances. Smoking is not permitted inside any house or cabin or on any screen porch. There will be a $750 charge for any smoking in either of these areas. Illegal drugs being used anywhere on the property will result in a $750 charge. Kegs and hookahs are not permitted anywhere on property under any circumstances. There will be a $500 charge should either of these items (kegs or hookahs) be found on the property (this includes outside areas too). If smoking (inside or on screen porches), illegal drugs (meaning what is illegal in Virginia), keg(s), hookah(s) or fireworks (there is a $500 fine for having fireworks or for shooting firearms at a property) are found on the property the guest will be asked to leave and there will be no refund whatsoever for any portion of the stay (including any future days/nights). Guests failing to check-out by 11 am agree to pay $50 an hour for a late check-out beginning at 11:01 am. If the guest is still there at 12:00 noon then then the charge is another $50 and so on with each additional hour the guest overstays their reservation. Late check-outs require prior written permission and applicable late check-out fees to be paid. Owners are not responsible to mail or hold on to left items. No check-ins or checkouts on Thanksgiving or Christmas Day, a charge of $100 will be charged.
Air-conditioned accommodations at this cabin offer fireplaces and coffee/tea makers. Rooms open to patios. Accommodations offer separate living rooms. Kitchens offer refrigerators, stovetops, microwaves, and separate dining areas. Bathrooms include shower/tub combinations.
The recreational activities listed below are available either on site or nearby; fees may apply.

      Rustic cabin

The inside was as expected per photos. A few things could be done to help us help keep things clean. A broom, a scrubber for dishes (I bought one and left it), hot water in the kitchen sink, I did let it run. There was very hot water in the bathroom so I filled a pot to wash dishes. The dishwasher did work but only one square of dishwashers soap. No extra garbage bags, only one in can. There are pots/pans but a little worse for wear. Lots of dishes and silverware and utensils. Otherwise good fridge, TV, beds, and towels. Bring your own propane or charcoal. The woodstove was nice but wood extra $. The area is pretty but may need SUV to get up the drive. But really nice deck to sit out on with a peak-a-boo view. The overall stay was very pleasant.

A little pricey for what you get

We really enjoyed our weekend getaway, but it was a little bit pricey for what you get. The cabin was absolutely beautiful -- they really paid a lot of attention to the interior of the cabin and we loved the river rock in the kitchen and bathroom. However, the exterior was really lacking. I know they plan to do work on the outside and I'm sure if that is as well thought out as the interior it will be fantastic. As it was, because one member of our party had mobility issues, we weren't really able to use the fire pit and portions of the porch that you had to cross uneven ground or slippery rocks to get to. So, we were really glad we didn't pay for fire wood as that would have been an absolute waste. Also, the overall cost was more than we anticipated -- by the time HomeAway tacked on fees, fees for extra people (even though there were three bedrooms we still were charged extra people for only five guests), pet fee, etc we had a bit of sticker shock. We ended up paying more than we intended to for a quick weekend get away. I think part of our disappointment was not having realistic expectations. And that's our fault. The road up to the cabin was much more difficult that I anticipated. Once I got up there, I didn't want to go back down for anything for fear I wouldn't be able to get back up. Our last day there it rained quite heavily and I was very concerned about getting back down. The road really isn't built for small city cars. The owners were lovely, and there was nothing really wrong with the cabin, it just wasn't the right fit for our family. Give it a shot if you're considering it, just make sure you have realistic expectations.

        4/5 Good

Beautiful cabin with tons of privacy!

We loved the cabin and the surrounding property. Gives you a lot of privacy and close proximity to several hiking trails and streams. We really enjoyed staying here, though didn't appreciate the wood rental rate. You must pay for it upfront at the beginning and they charge you by length of stay, so we paid $60 for unlimited. However, it rained for two of the four days we were staying there and felt ripped off. I would recommend you don't purchase their wood and just buy some from another place for like $5. Phooey on them. Other than that, great place to stay!

            good weekend location

Good place for the weekend. Neat location. AC for the whole place was a portable air conditioner, and it was marginal at best. The evenings were cool in Jul, and we just opened the windows for a great night's sleep even know there were no screens. The kitchen was well appointed and the beds comfortable. The loft is tight, so when they say it is really for kids, they mean it! Nice deck with a combo gas/charcoal grill too.

Not worth the money it cost

Greetings: because the owner did not get the text receipt of the pet deposit I felt I was treated like I was trying to get by with not doing right. Had to sign and initial at least five pages. Was told if I needed anything to contact owner. Contacted owner by text several times - never received a reply. There was no hot water at the kitchen sink, the water was a "rusty" color when bath was drawn, Bought bottled water because I was a little afraid of the color. The view was very nice and it was very quiet. Good hiking. I have stayed at other cabins for half the price and received better conditions. I like the mountains but would not rent this cabin again.
